I am trying to install xp on my system with 98se but want to keep both os. First xp wont auto start so I go to my computer drive h: where xp cd is and open cd ---\english\winxp\pro\setup.exe and start to load. Everything goes smoothly for install I select advanced because I have four hdd and want xp on a diff drive than 98se. Check box for specify partition to install xp and hit next . Xp starts to load files and than reboots to load xp but I don't get any screen to specify which drive to load xp. As setup continues I get the following message----an unexpected error (768) occurred at line 5101(5118 after pressing any key) in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\set.c. press any key to continue next screen states----setup either detected multiple disks in your machine that are indistinguishable or detected raw disk(s). Setup has corrected the problem but a reboot is required. setup cannot continue. press any key to exit. I press any key and system reboots to loading xp but the same problem occurs. I have the shuttle ak35gtr mobo with 4 maxtor 40gb 133 hdd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did the compatibility check from microsoft.com and the ony device not comp. is my scanner umax astra 2400s and some of the drivers for my sound, video cards need to be updated but I was going to do this after I loaded xp

Is the winXP disk you have an update or full version? Try booting from the XP CD and run setup from there. It's much better this way, if the XP disk you have is bootable, which most I've seen are.

all the XP cd's are bootable, it's just that some systems arent configured to boot from the CD. This is fixed in the BIOS, although some BIOS's may not let you do this, there should be an update for BIOS so that you can.

Are all 4 HHD formated? I assume you are going to put XP on one of the HHD other than the one you have W98 on. Can you boot from the CD?

sorry for being away so long but system went down when trying to correct another problem all fixed and back---all 4 hdd are formatted and have dos partitions on them--this xp cd is a full pro version 500mb and I can only get to xp setup through opening drive g and going \english\winxp\pro\setup.exe but xp starts the loading process--fisrt check compatibility then run setup--xp loads setup files and takes me to the dual boot screen but as soon as it tries to load xp the original message comes up. I am wandering if the raid controllers on the motherboard are the problem--I do get screen with bottom task bar asking if I need to load drivers for ssci controllers(highpoint raud I assume) and then continues to load until the error screen comes up and stops--even after letting xp reboot the same problem(message) appears. Any suggestions
