need a USB modem...

Hey all,

Grandma has a Gateway Astro - remember those? Basically Gateway's answer to the Imac. Well, one of the brilliant design strategies used on it was to not include any Serial ports!
Lightning seems to have smoked the onboard modem on my the computer - and now the only easy option is an external USB modem..
What is the best deal for a solid one? Is there a SupraExpress USB? I know its a great serial.. Thanks!!

I have a usr model no. 0525 external that does usb. This may no longer be made but at least you know they are out there.
It does pretty much what my internal usr hard modem does. Have yet to run it usb but was assured it runs fine that way by the guy who sold it to me. Probly less latency running it usb as opposed to comms. I run it with my 750 box and it does very well in games.

Was that modem on-board? (Sorry, not familiar with that brand)Are there no PCI (or ISA slots) in there? you can still get some swell PCI and ISA "hard" modems.

USB modems work fairly well, but they are similar to winmodems in that it takes CPU power to run the USB. Get one that at least has a hardware chipset in it, a USB winmodem is kinda adding insult to injury. The Supra Express USB has a Lucent hardware chipset in it, but the Supra Max USB is a software modem. I don't know if it's still sold, but we had good luck with a Best Data Smart One USB that has a hardware Conexant chipset in it.
