Here's a low-down on upcoming chipsets from AMD

AMD 760- will support Agp 4x, ddr ram, 200 and 266mhz bus and ATA/100 I think but I'm not sure....

AMD 760MP- same as above but will support 2 processors

AMD 770- will support same as 760 or better (not quite sure) and multiple processors; aimed for the server market I guess.

These chipsets are supposted be released the 2nd half of 2000, and I believe but am not 100% sure will be available in both socket and slot a variants.

These were Amd chipsets, anybody wanna give us the latest from Intel?

I used to keep up with the Intel chipsets until the tried and true BX. It will keep me going for a while yet, then back to brushing up on chipsets.

Only thing I've heard about Chipzilla in the past few weeks is...

1)Rambus RAM is still a flawed concept, and is doomed to failure.

2)The new post gigahertz processors that we can only look forward to putting on a BX board.

Couldn't help myself http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/wink.gif.

I don't think that RAMBUS is so much a flawed concept as it is too expensive to implement. Nobody wants to pay $500.00+ CDN for 128Mb of RAM. The 820 chipset never had a problem with RAMBUS, but rather SDRAM. RAMBUS works fine, but because of it's expense, it isn't for the everyday computer user.

Hey Floppyfriend,
I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't know AMD made chipsets. I'm familiar with Intel, VIA, and SIS only. This sounds like very good news.

When AMD gets there dual processor systems out the door it will be a real swift kick in the N*** for Chipzilla. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/tongue.gif http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sorry I had to say that, since I am wanting on a dual Ghz. Wow just think of that 2 GHZ of pure processing power.......

That is the Kick I am talking about....then everyone will be saying poor intel.... http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif

Now putting up Flame shield.....Enhanced with Borg Technology and powered by AMD. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Poor Intel? Not so fast. Don't you think Intel might have a few tricks up their sleeve?

Yeah, AMD made the 750 "irongate" chiupset for the original Athlons. Before VIA came out with KX133 the irongate was your only choice for Athlons.

Nah... Intel has nothing... going outta biz, being bought out by Cyrix http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

BTW dual 1Ghz doesn't = 2Ghz power.

Hal, I do understand what you about 1 Ghz + 1 Ghz doesn't equal 2 Ghz. Since there are other factors involed. LIke just because you are running a multithread OS like win2K, NT, or linux. The App. you are wanting to run may not be multi thread...Example Seti at home (even the Nt and linux verison) are not multi thread. So the only way you would get a preformance increase is to run two clients....I know this because I have a friend that is running seti on Win 2k with 2 550 Xeon processors....

LawyerRon, intel has a few tricks left, but they are taking their time getting them out aren't they...
What kind of Marketing is it, when you let you compition get a head of you? I must have missed class they day that was taught.... http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

HAL9000

I don't think that Intel is that concerned with AMD getting ahead of them. As for the marketing, ask anyone the Intel slogan and they say "Intel inside" then ask for the AMD slogan................. do they have one? To the first time buyer.... which is more memorable?

Amd may not have a slogan...but at least they don't just add I, II, III to their chips....like Intel does. I heard the next chip will be the Pentium IV....hmmm, makes you think huh?

Also, on another note let's keep this thread as clean as it is now...I hate to close a thread cause we're getting rude....a good Intel vs. Amd War never hurt anybody here, right Toaster? http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif

But even with I II III IV, ask the first time buyer what kind of computer they want and the first words that fall out of their mouths are usually Intel or Pentium. I've even heard people ask about the "AMD Pentium" http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Very true Hal, I see a couple reasons for this: One, just until recently Intel has all always been the leader in performance. Second Intel has always been more reliable, as they've had less problems with chipsets....Via had some problems with some Socket 7 boards. And third....wasn't Intel the bigger company of the two?

HAL9000

I can agree with that. Whoo hoo... we agree Flopster http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I will still take a BX chipset over anything else Intel makes and certainly over anything from Via et al. I am not anti/pro-AMD or anti/pro-Intel - I just recognize a superior design that has aged better than anything else out there - and will still perform well enough for 98% of my customers and more importantly, is STABLE and BUG-FREE.

My most popular system these days is still a Katmai P3-550 on a Shuttle or Epox BX board.

You guys that are looking for the last bit of performance are always going to have problems. This is not intended to be derogatory - the stuff you guys do and the jams you find yourself in are very educational to the manufacturers!

I suppose computers today are like cars were 30 years ago. We used to try to squeeze the last bit of performance and efficiency we could get out of our cars, and we always would screw something up in the process. Today you can't *do* much with cars without running afoul of the law, much less finding a way to actually do it. 30 years ago, we just advanced the timing till it pinged like hell and either backed it off or bought better gas. Then we drilled out the carb jets. I blew more than one hole in a piston from doing this......

AMD and Intel.........Ford and Chevy?

Camaro lovers think Mustangs suck, and vice versa.

Well said GLC.

2 years ago I would never have own an AMD product. However no matter which you personally like better you almost certainly have to agree that AMD has made some great improvements in the last 2 years....

As to the Pentium I II III IV. Why stop ... Intel has great name recognition with the pentium line of chips. If they change the name they will have to start over again with the name recognition.

I also agree with byte.. I wouldn't have touched an AMD two years ago. The last machine that I built was a K6/2 500 that ran rock solid. I used it as my personal system and loved it. I finally sold it to a friend and now I'm trying to decide which processor I want to go with. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/wink.gif

Probably the only reason that I have not tried AMD nor will I for a while, is just like glc said, I have a trusty BX chipset. Still running my Celerons, after that, maybe the PIII. It all depends on how high (Mhz) and how cheap the Celerons are. Rumor has it that the Celeron will be dropped after 700Mhz, but might still make it to 800Mhz and still be at a 66Mhz FSB. When it comes time for me to break the bank an replace the motherboard, processor, and RAM, then it becomes time to take another look.

Well i took a change last summer and brought my first AMD. it was my mightly K6-3/450 that I am always talking about. You must think that I believe it can walk on water the way I talk about it.

Anyway, back to my point...My have that processor on my DFI MB with a VIA chipset. 100 mhz bus, with the processor overclocked to 475 mhz...Can't get stable at 500...Maybe with better cooling I could...Anyway, it has servered me well for over a year, with the last 6 months overclocked...I never have window bluc screens or random lockup....I have been truly happy with thim machine...I don't leave my machine on all the time, but when it is idle I run seti..In fact I have it set to run all the time in the back ground when my pc is on..

Once I ran my system for 2 weeks without a reboot. I had seti running, I would surf the net...Play my games, run microsoft office 2000, and I never had a problem during that time...I was stress testing the processor, and it was overclocked at that time...

I know it is not the best on the market now, but It has been reliable as Hell for over a year, i never even thing about it freezing up or crashing...

Yes, I have had a few crashing, but I was the main reason, me and beta software.

Plus everyone know how the Game star trek armada had some problems...I beat the game with out a patch with out a crash...However I did have the same lock up in the end video that was a known problem and the patch did fix that....

SO in short I really feel that I got my money's worth with this processor and I am using it right now...

In my book the following are my favorite processors every..

486 Intell DX 66
586 Intell P 166 no mmx on a MB with 512 k cache
AMD K6-2/300-500 except for the k62/350

K6-3/450 yes I made this stand out... http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Intell P2/450
Intell Xeon processors like the 550

I have not really used the P3's enought to judge since most of our customers are on a tight budget.
I don't like Celerons because of the Low cache. Sorry everyone...

Since my first computer I learn about want cache is and what is does...And the most cache the better I believe...

HAL9000
08-03-2000, 05:35 PM
More cache is better... to a point. It's been a long time, so I don't have a clue where it was that I read it. The article stated that more cache was better, but that for the average user, 1Mb was the limit and any more than that was a waste of time. They never did clarify what the "average user" really was. Where is that Toaster... he's gotta have a view on this.

AMD has run in cycles. The first really *good* AMD was the 386DX40 - a speed that Intel never made. Then the next good series was the 486DX2/80, DX4/100, DX4/120, and true DX4/133. Other than the DX4/100, these are speeds that Intel never made. In this era, AMD's forte was refining and improving old technology that Intel had already abandoned and moved on to bigger and better things. My main machine was an AMD DX4/100 for quite a while, and it served me until I *had* to move up to a Pentium just to run some software. That DX4 would blow away Pentium 60's.

AMD then entered a very dark time. The K5 was a joke, and the original K6 (not -2) wasn't much better. Starting with the K6-2, things have been doing nothing but looking up since. I suppose I would start supporting AMD more when we get better chipsets to support it.

Hello Cyrix - are you still alive back there? This whole situation reminds me of the late 70's to the late 80's in the car world. GM (Intel) was having major problems with their technology and they were surviving mainly on their brand recognition. Ford was building a lot of junk, but then the Taurus (Athlon) arrived - and turned the company's fortune completely around. Chrysler (Cyrix) was building cars so bad that the only ones they could sell were cop cars (because they performed well, but reliability was miserable - loaded with bugs), and the government had to bail their @$$ out.

You think Via can bail Cyrix out or are they gonna go the way of the IDT Winchip (American Motors)?
