I've got a buddy who's old HP CD-RW just died. So he wants to go out any buy a new one -- no big deal but he's been burned enough times with on-line purchases he absolutley refuses to buy on-line. (So please don't respond with some comment about how he should get over it...blah blah blah....and buy from mwave or newegg -- I've already been down that road earlier today).

So we were out looking at CompUSA and Best Buy -- the CD-RW he seems to like (as do many salespeople) is a Universal BusLink drive -- it looks very much like Lite-On drives. One salesperson at Best Buy even mentioned that they are the same (I didn't mention Lite-On at all -- he brought it up).

Anyone know if that's true? If it's not, how good/bad are these drives?

I don't know if they are or not, but I have seen Wal- Mart carry the LiteOn drives.

Get the FCC number off the drive and research it - I do think the Buslinks are Lite-Ons. So are the TDK's and Cendynes.

Busslink, Polaroid, and a lot of OEMS are Lite-Ons. They are great drives and I have no complaints with them. In the past two weeks I have burned close to 200 disks with mine and no coasters. Nice and quiet.
If he can wait a couple of days order it from Newegg. It comes with Nero.

Yup, far a I know the Buslinks are Lite-On's. I've had one for a year with no problems.
