I just joined ADSL and am wondering how I can setup an FTP server so that i can access my pc outside home and people can upload from me.

Do i have to ask my Service provider to set it up or can i do my self?

Cheers

Hi sarit16,

Some ISPs have blocked the FTP port (21) to prevent people from running servers. If you're connection isn't blocked, you can run an IIS FTP server which comes with Win98 and Win2000. You can find instructions at this site, just click on the Step by Step link.

http://www.dslwebserver.com/

Or you can use an FTP server program like Serv-U.

http://www.serv-u.com/

Hope that helps.

First, are you behind a router or is this computer connected directly to the DSL modem?

Then it should be fairly easy, the documentation has a good tutorial on setting up a basic server.

http://www.bpftpserver.com/manual/manual_eng/30.tutorial.html

Just make sure the anonymous FTP option is not enabled, setup an account with a name and password so that only you can log on.

Edit: Oops, forgot the not in the above sentance, please make note. ;)

so accordding to the instructions above do i use the host name '127.0.0.1' , how will another computer other side of the world recognize that thats my pc?

so with the host name above does that mean i dont need an isp number etc.

Lastly so with the above host name i can acess my pc hard drive from anywhere?

cheers Doc

The last post should read:

Just wanted to make sure. ;)

And yes, 127.0.0.1 is the IP of your "localhost", but that IP that you will connect to is your DSL IP. You can find this by typing winipcfg in Run (for Win9x) or ipconfig in the command prompt for Win2K/XP. You then just type this IP in an FTP client along with the login/pass and you should connect and see your drive.

so does that mean i use BulletProof Server Creater and follow the instructions using the IP '127.0.0.1' this will setup my pc.

Then when i need to acess my pc i use the ISP's IP number to get in using any FTP Program.
