Hi, My friends computer won't initilaize her modem. She says she disconnected from the internet to use the phone went back to connect and it says: is not initilaizing the modem.
can't I put the recovery disk in her machine and do a parshal recovery? thanks for your help in advance . god bless
Doesn't this mean it is missing a driver?

reboot the computer and see if the problem goes away. If not, what kind of modem are we talking about? HOw long has she had this computer?
If reboot doesn't do it, try updating the modem driver.

Sounds like it's just not fully releasing the modem software when she disconnects. Sounds like the driver update should help!

Yea, maybe, but first try rebooting your computer as mentioned above, and if your modem is an external modem turn that off and then on again then try and connect online.
I've found that if you manually disconnect the modem jack you then have to reboot ( after plugging it back in) to get the PC to pick
up the connections. Also, if this is happening simply from a connection program ( disconnecting from) then I would suggest
reloading or upgrading the drivers. ( cause it shouldnt do that ) A clean install is always best..ie; remove all from add/remove
programs & remove all from control panel/system/devices/modem & adapter and then reboot and load everything again. If this
doesnt work then it might be a problem with the connection program itself. ( trial & illimination) It certainly shouldnt do that. If
you illiminate these possible causes..( assuming she is on DSL) you might want to check into her telephone lines themselves.
When I was on DSL they upgraded abunch of line stuff and it helped with alliot of glitches.
I would think it's safer to assume that she is on 56k dialup, and that this is an issue with a Winmodem driver.
