Install of Mandrake 7.1

Hi,

I got a version of Mandrake 7.1 that I'd like to install on my PC. I've tried to install 7.02 but got nowhere with the Xconfiguration: it always hung when checking my video card. Due to this and other things I kind of gave up for a while.

Now that I have 7.1, I have a different problem: I copied the cdrom.img files to a floppy to boot from and do the install from the CDROM. Unfortunately, it does not recognise my drive, and I've tried all drivers listed! It just hangs there if I try to boot from CDROM.

I've read somewhere that 7.1 might have some problems with older CDROM drives. Is this true? Because I rescued my drive from some old PC.

I just recently installed Mandrake 6.0 on an older machine with an older cd-rom. Everything worked okay for me, and that was 6.0.

How far into the install are you getting? Have you booted from the floppy into the install program okay? Did you get through the partitioning okay? What types of messages are you getting about the cd-rom?

When booting with the CDROM, the screen stays blanck.
When booting from the floppy, it loads a couple of things and you can select "typical" or expert install, or even a rescue. Whichever type of install I choose, the next step is to load the CDROM driver. And that's where it can't see it and presents me with a short lists of drivers (Panasonic, Sony, Atapi,...) I've tried all of them, none of them works. So I cannot get into the install at all, unless I copy across all of the install files on harddisk and install from there.

What do you mean by "none of them works"? What happens after you enter a driver? Copying to HD still will not make it recognize the cdrom.

I would determine what type of cdrom drive you have, either by removing the cover and having a looks-see or, if possible, booting to windows and check in the device drivers panel. Additionally verify that the drive does indeed work in the machine.

Once you have this info you may want to post a message on http://www.linux.com. They have support and chat features for help with this sort of thing.

Post back here with what you find out.

Hi,

By "none of them works", I mean it still cannot find the CDROM and tells me to select a driver for my CDROM.

I know what make it is (DOS detects it) but cannot remember it from the top of my head, and it's not in the list offered by Mandrake. 7.02 had no problems finding it. And the drive does work in DOS and Win98, or even is seen by older versions of Mandrake.

When I talked about copying the files to HD, I meant using them to install from the HD, but I am not sure that I wouldn't have to use the CDROM.

Once you get the make and model of you cdrom, go to http://www.linux.com and click on hardware. From there click on cdrom. You will see a list of the cdroms that linux should recognize. There will be some comments if you click on a make and model. One that I clicked on referred to the redhat site which has pages on supported cdroms. http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/CDROM-HOWTO.html

Its worth checking out, but you first need to confirm the make and model of your drive.
