Please bear with me here.
Sorry everybody I was not sure which catagory to post this in.

It all started trying to set up a dual boot. I already had WIN ME set up on the system on one partition, then I tried to load Win2000 Pro on a logical drive in the extended partition.
Everything went fine till the set up was detecting hardware then it stopped and gave me an error (Problem with hardware contact vendor). Well I figured it was because I was trying to install onto a logical drive. At this point I was able to reboot to the OS choices as to which I was able to get into Win ME. Then I decided to use Norton Ghost 2002 to copy an image of my cdrive to cd's which I did. Then I ran fdisk to repartition my harddrive. OK. Then I tried to copy my saved image of ME back to the harddrive, no good the copy process stops about at the end of the first cd about 700mb mark and gives an error that a file (GHOSTTERR.TXT)
is corrupt. Now I checked Support Symantec for Ghost. I read in the support section that the program will stop if it finds a corrupt file. Then I dug deep and found this -----

Recovering important files
If there are files in the image that you must recover, try opening the image file with Ghost Explorer to extract the files needed.

If you cannot extract the files, run Ghost Explorer from the command line with the switches -IGNOREINDEX and -CORRUPT.

Using -IGNOREINDEX
Ghost includes an index file within each image file, and uses the index to find the other files that are in the image file. The -IGNOREINDEX switch opens Ghost Explorer and tells Ghost Explorer to find the files by reading directly from the image file, rather than from the index file.

To use the switch, run GhostExp.exe from a DOS command line:

"D:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\Ghostexp.exe" -ignoreindex

You may need to change the path to match the path on your computer.

Using -CORRUPT
When Ghost Explorer encounters file corruption in an image file, it normally reports an error and stops. When you use the -corrupt switch, Ghost Explorer ignores the corrupt area of the file and attempts to find the next file in the image.

To use the switch, run GhostExp.exe from a DOS command line:

"D:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\Ghostexp.exe" -corrupt

Recovering overwritten drives
See the document Recovering a drive after writing over it with Ghost.

Preventing corruption while managing image files
To reduce the possibility of corruption while managing image files, use the DOS COPY command with the /V switch, which enables verification, instead of dragging and dropping with the Windows Explorer. For example, type:

COPY /V C:\IMAGE.GHO D:\IMAGE.GHO

problem is my dos skills stink.
I did do a clean install of Me to get my system back up but I would really like to recover this image since it has some files I need . This image spans 5 cd's about 4 gigs. There were no apparent problems recording the image, also I did not use compression. I do know how to point to another drive in dos but I've never copied in dos. I think I have to type copy or something in the command line. If someone computer savvy has the time to read this over and type directions what I should do exactly to recover I would appreciate the help. Also be advised It is not necessary to recover the whole image I'm basically intersted in recovering my AOL files. Everybody in the house is mad at me for losing thier favorite sites. Thanks in advance for any help.

PS. I treid using Ghost Explorer. But I need directions how to use the ignore corruption since I don't quite fully understand the above directions.

Hi there Highrisemech,
I think the copy command in DOS would apply when copying the ghost file from one drive to another. That file would remain a ghost file to be used for a recovery at a later time ... it just gets moved without the risk of getting corrupted.
As for ghost explorer, just an idea ... could it not be used in Windows seeing that Windows is now reinstalled.

There are about six files that will appear in ghost explorer on the first disk, but I'm not sure exactly what I should do with them. In my spare time I'll try to copy them to my harddrive, then try the copy command in dos. I will not be able to get to it anytime soon though since I'm going to be busy. Just bought myself a place at the shore and I'll be setting that up. As soon as I get a chance I'll post back here with any progress.

I just double checked with ghost explorer ... seems all you need to do to recover some of the files onto a system that already has an OS is to right click and select 'restore'. Then it'll give the option to restore to a location of your choice. BTW, the copy line 'COPY /V C:\IMAGE.GHO D:\IMAGE.GHO ' doesn't seem right ... the 'IMAGE.GHO' part at the end of 'D:\IMAGE.GHO' ... but that shouldn't be needed anyways.

I had copied ghost files in Windows before and they had gotten corrupted so I'll try that again in DOS or possibly even ghost.

A precaution to possibly take when doing a restore on a particular system for the first time is to try it on another drive first. I have run into problems when the HD was too small for the image.

Good luck with setting up the shore palace and recovering these files. :)

Thanks for the help Archie. as soon as I get a chance I'll try it on a blank system, I have a twenty gig in there. I'll let you know what happens.
