I would just like to know how mother's day is sexist and taking away the rights of women. If a person is a mother, it is usually a result of her (and his) own choices. My sister is a woman (good, huh?), but she is not a mother. Do I give her mother's day gifts or ask her when she is going to have a child? No. Maybe we should ban father's day, too, because we wouldn't want to offend homosexuals. Or, maybe we should require men to start birthing the children, and then everything would be equal.

The Taliban doesn't allow dissent. Al Quada doesn't tolerate dissent. The fact that we all have the right to be different is one of the things our enemies hate about us. Supporting the right of everyone to express his or her political or other personal opinion, no matter how wacky, is one of the ways we can oppose our avowed enemies.

Regardless of what Karl Rove or the other members of Bush Administration say, you can be a loyal American without approving every action they take. In fact holding every politician accountable for postitive results is the duty of every loyal American.

If we got rid of Mother's Day then I assume Father's Day would be gone too. I could save a few hundred bucks not having to celebrate those two occasions. In fact, I would not have to put up with fancy restaurant reservations, long distance calls, flowers, cards and waste my time. Instead I could just sit and watch TV and drink beer with all my friends who are unemployed from restaurants, telecommuncations, florists and publishers who lost business during two of the biggest events of the year.

I didn't realize that the sole reason for the existence of Mother's Day and Father's Day was economic in nature. I didn't even think that was an important reason. I thought it was to show appreciation for our parents, which should happen every day of the year anyway. But what do I know?

I think Alan has a point , it seems the only way to celebrate ANY holiday is to spend $$, which to me has NOTHING to do with the event, mother's, father's, valentine, CHRISTMAS, for christ sake, if you don,t spend $$$ you don't care..........poppycock.....in our case we (my son and I) never send a gift or card that is not handmade by one of us.......he's in his teens now , but you can imagine how disappointed many people we're to receive some of his "childish" efforts.........LOL the looks on their faces , when they just didn't get it!

The nice thing about America is there are no walls. Tom Cruise is free to go elsewhere and the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned and take all of the other Hollywood types along that love this country for the millions they can make then blame the government for all of the problems (drugs,tax evasion,etc.) that they help cause.

You know alot. My wife of 32 years knows shes' my Valentine. Why a card, candy, gift, etc.?
Mother's Day reminds me of my Mom and what she went through to raise we 3 kids. I'll send her flowers and a card thanking her for what she did for me. She is now 81.
My wife should get the same from our two boys.
All in all, the commercialization of the holidays is gone way overboard. The idea is to make us feel guilty for not remembering when I remember everyday.

The commercialization of holidays is merely intended to make money for Hallmark, etc.

My dad died earlier this year. I didn't know how much I would miss him until he was gone. Next time you see your parents, give them a hug and a kiss. Let them know you love them. Never know when you might not see them again.

Actually I was not stating that Mother's and Father's Day was all about economics. I was replying to the quote from Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., in the article that

"the treaty would really save women's lives," contended Maloney. "It costs nothing but it affirms our country's commitment to basic human rights. And it is a tool to provide better education and health care and freedom from violence for women around the world."

She states it would cost nothing but as I demonstrated it goes a little deeper than just to cancel the celebration. I believe that Mother's Day is the single busiest day for florists, telephone companies and restaurants. Don't know how big it is for card companies and candy makers but it has to be big too. Here is another elected official once again speaking before thinking it through.
