s-video

I have just found out that my TV does have an s-video port (who thought it would be in the front of the TV and not the back). So I'm gonna get a cable to use with it. What I was wondering is, will this port transfer sound to the TV as well, or does that need to be done seperately? Also how does this tune into the TV?

S-video tansfers sound and audio, if you are using a DVD player or PS2. If you run S-video from your computer, you will have to run the audio from your sounds card.

Well thanks for clearing that up! Is there any way then that I could connect my sound card to my home HiFi? I got a sound blaster Live 5.1 player. I don't have the platinum box though. :-( I was hoping I could have it that all I need to do is take the box down and leave the sound etc. upstairs if I want to go watch a wee DVD.

I'm pretty sure in radio shack they do have adapters for converting the 1/8inch connectors from your soud card into RCA jacks for your setereo system.

But then again as I've heard discussed here many times that would involve the whole sunlight issue.

Yup, adapters are available to go from the 1/8" jack to RCA. We sell them in our store and they are quite popular for just that purpose.

I've got my SoundBlaster Live connected to my stereo with an adapter from Radio Shack for watchind DVDs, among other things. It's a piece of cake to set up.

S-Video does not transfer sound, only video information (has only 4 connections, 1 for intensity, 1 for color, and 2 GND). You need to connect the sound extra.

Well I got one problem, I don't think radio shack serve UK, so do you think there is any chance of me getting those adapters localy? I found a local electronics store that do S-video but not sure bout the other cables.

Ok, I've got one for y'all. How do you connect a system with a video card that has s-video out to an ancient color TV that has neither an s-video outlet nor any of the RCA outlets, only a coax connection. This one even stumped Radio Shack. Only solution I can come up with is to convert the s-video to RCA and then that to coax. It's kinda costly (needing to buy the RF switch, etc...). If anyone has another suggestion, I'd be glad to give it a shot.

Have you looked into a a/v source selector I have seen some that input s-video, rca and coax then output either s-video, rca and coax.

Thanks for all the responses, all. No, my TV doesn't have SCART. I have looked into an a/v source selector, but, unless I'm mistaken, they are fairly expensive. GLC, your response was intriguing. I DO have a VCR connected to my TV and it does have RCA jacks. Can I convert s-video to RCA, hooking my computer to the VCR and still get the TV-out on the TV? Didn't think of this and it would be cool if it worked.

I did a search on source selectors and all of the newer ones don’t have the coax option, but the VCR route may be your best choice. There are s-video to rca cables and adapters available.

Didn't work. Hooked the s-video to my computer, ran it throught the converter, hooked it up tot the RCA video in of my VCR. My video card recognized that I had a TV monitor connected, but, no matter what I tried, I couldn't get a display of my desktop. Even disconnected the coax-cable input. Nothing. Only thing I can think of is that the VCR isn't converting the signal. Guess I either need to buy the RF converter or see if any of the other TV's in the house either have s-video or RCA jacks.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help, so far.

I didn't think I had an s-video in my TV, but I was looking at the back of the TV, I had forgot about the wee front panel andin there was the s-video.

lpc300, don't give up. That is exactly the setup I have for my TV-out: an S-Video cable converted to RCA and run through my VCR. Did you have the VCR on the right channel (usually "line in" or something like that)? What kind of converter do you have?

Radio Shack in the UK goes by the name Tandy. If you look on half their products they will show the name Radio Shack. Wierd huh.

lpc300, go buy a cheap DVD player. They all have S-video inputs. Run the computer to the DVD. Run the DVD to your VCR, and the VCR to the TV.

Thanks for the encouragement, doc. Line-in is just what I plugged into on my VCR. Still nothing. Priced an RF converter today and think I'm going to go that route. I'm actually trying to accomplish two things by doing this. Firstly, just general tinkering. Annoys me that there is an unused port (the s-video connection) on my computer. Secondly, I want to use my computer's DVD player on my TV. I'm starting to realize, though that the money I'm spending on the converters and cabling is more than a cheap DVD player. :eek: Oh well.

Actually, DVD players have S-video out, not in. My bad, I wasn't thinking when I made my post this morning. Too early, lol.
