Actually, AMD or Intel... then money, then what you want to use it for. But that's only us intelligent people that think that way, everyone else bases their PC purchases SOLELY on money.

How useless, OpenGL is far superior to anything they have created, DirectX, and Intel's Direct3D falls far short as well. It just looks and performs better.

When I spec out or build a computer, I look at what the person wants it for, business or gaming. ( If the person says that they want a machine just for some word processing and surfing I still build it to do moderate gaming, because eventually they will do it)
Next I find out what they want to spend. (Here I perfer business because they always have $1500 to build the machine, whereas the individual wants a $1500 machine for $300)
Then based upon this I will chose Intel or AMD. After this I select the most important componant, the Motherboard and the chipset to use. (This is where I do most of my research). After this it is stroage space, video card, sound, RAM Amount, and other drives and cards. And lastly I get the fastest CPU I can get with the remaining money.
A fast CPU with a cheap video card, slow hard drive, cheap video/sound card, cheap case and power supply, all based on a cheap motherboard will be a cheap slow computer when compared to a quality build with a slightly slow CPU.

I have almost the same computer building philosophy, morris. The mobo is the most important part of a PC. To me the order is as follows: mobo, CPU (but after reading your post I think I'll change dat), PSU, vid card, monitor, case, HD and RAM.

A fast CPU with a cheap video card, slow hard drive, cheap video/sound card, cheap case and power supply, all based on a cheap motherboard will be a cheap slow computer when compared to a quality build with a slightly slow CPU.
I wish the people here could understand that! Here you see P4s @ 1.7 or 1.8 running in all-in-one PC Chips mobos!! And housed in small tower cases!! Or AMDs in small cases with no case fans!!
