This is really annoying. Could it be because of programs I installed? Leaving my PC on for too long? What? :(

Yes it very well could be because of the type or number of programs installed on your machine. try hitting ctrl--alt--del and see whats running, shut some of those programs off first, what OS do you have? If you have XP use msconfig and hit the startup tab all the way on the right and shutoff (uncheck) any and all programs that you dont need to have load with win when you boot your computer. Without more information it's hard to say for sure whats the cause, these are just educated guesses.
