ok, I've been troubleshooting this Compuserve mess for a while... I finally got to their last resort.... THey said I'll need to re-install windows beause of the winstock ro winsock files were messed up. Now does this mean I could Still keep all my data and information on my drive? Or are there any other ways to reinstall or fix these winstock or sock files?? Because I cant find my Windows 98se disk and I dont really feel like doing that... thanks!:)

My personal thoughts are that there it isn't necessary to reinstall windows because of winsock problem - reinstall IE or like wise should do it...

gosh IM really starting to not like microsoft hah... ok, I need to do the following to straightne out my problmes
-reinstall internet explorer
- figure out why my comptuer hangs onte h the comptuer is shutting donw.. before it shuts off by itself.... like Everytime I have to manually shut it off wrong
any suggestions? then I should ahve all my problems revised... thanks!
I read you have Windows98 so now do you know the internet explorer version you are running there ? Help will tell you - to reinstall you need the installation files - you can download them from the internet - and then just from Add/Remove select Internet Explorer and then either choose repair - uninstall - or reinstall.. that's it.
As that your computer hangs on shutdown you first have to find out what makes it hang and this you can do if you end all running application as well as some leftover drivers.
If you scroll back here on Pcmech - then you should find many post relying on this problem because you aren't the first to experience them.
I know this isn't a great help but it's the direction to start out.

EDIT
Make also sure that "Winsock file " exists only once in your Windows folder - default it is in C:\Windows - there are some apps which also place it in \windows\System - rename or remove either on if you find it twice...
