Hi,

I have a machine with Windows95, and I want to upgrade to Windows98. My cd of Win98 is NOT an upgrade, it's the full version. I don't want to loss any files and I don't want to re-install all my program again. Do you guys know how to do it?

Thanks

I think it will install right on top of 95 without loseing any settings or data

You can't, it will say that another operating system has been found and the setup will quit :)

Actually there is a way but I never suggest doing it. That way is to rename win.com from dos before installing. But if you wanted to try that then I STRONGLY suggest you have all your important files backed up first in case you run into a big problem like i've seen others do after doing that then installing. ***If you try that little trick then you're doing it at your own risk!!*** Don't blame me if you do it and things get f-ed up. If you do it it's important that you point the install into the current windows folder or it'll create a new one called windows.000 and install into that and you do not want that to occur. Also after the install you may have to reinstall the driver for the video card if your colors are messed up. But as I said, ***If you try that little trick then you're doing it completely at your own risk!!*** I will not be responsible if something goes wrong as I do not recommend doing it.

I suggest you not do that and just format the drive. You'll be better off.

You've got it right Kento. You don't need to rename it, just delete it. And you're not supposed to have any problems. I just wanted to see if actually someone knew it. I called some tech and they didnt' even know the answer they said: it is impossible sir you need to format your hard drive. hehe

Posted here (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38140) in the Tips and Tricks section both how to do it and how to straighten it out if you forget to rename the C:\WINDOWS.000 directory back to C:\WINDOWS. It's no big deal and I have done it successfully, literally hundreds of times with Win95 to Win98 or WinME.

I will say this, if there was anyway to convience you to do a clean install I would try, as it really is the best way to do it.

I'll second that, files are no big deal at all to back up, and as far as programs go, do you really have anything in 95 that is that importent, or that you would not be able to reinstall on 98.
