I am trying to install a new 10GB hard drive into a Packard Bell Legend. With the new HD installed, I can only get to an "A" prompt. When I try to change to "C", it gives me an error message: "invalid drive specification".

If I can't get access to the new HD, how in the &@%$ can I FDISK / format the new HD, and copy the Win 98 operating system onto it ???

I tried getting into the set-up menu, and "auto configuring" the new HD - but without success.

Thank you.

Boot from your Win98CD with CD support. At the A:\ prompt, type in FDISK and answer Y to large disk support. Create your partition(s), reboot. Boot again with CD support. Switch to your CD drive, then to the Win98 directory and run FORMAT C:

As long as the HD is recognized by the BIOS, then even with floppy WIn98 bootdisk you type FDISK at the A: prompt and as HAL said Y for large disk support and you will be in to FDISK utility where you create your partition, reboot then you will be able to go from A: to C: and then format the drive!!

Agree with each of the previous posters - but may just use as hal9000 wrote the CDROM - in the bios boot options - set the CDROM to primary boot - insert the Win98 Cdrom restart - and hit enter 3 times this will install Win98 for you - you can resize the partition later using partition magic or like wise..

Is the HD showing up in the BIOS screen? Or can you get into setup and redetect the drive?
