sam21,
I will only play on the line out plug. Line in is for another sound source such as cassette player, etc. Also MS has had trouble with Media Player 7.1. You may want to remove it and go back to 6.4.
What sound card or mobo do you have?
Carl

Onboard PCI soundpro...and i can't find the name of the mobo..it's my bro's comp...

sam21,
Is the system home built or store bought? If store bought, what brand?
Carl

It's store bought...but it's one of those stores that build systems and then sell them to ya..it's not a name brand, the case has a VLD badge on hte front tho...

sam21,
Here is what I think MAY be the problem.
The sound card drivers are corrupted or out of date. Current drivers can be d/l'd fron the internet.
The settings are wrong in the pc. Go to Settings>Control Panel>Multimedia and see what has been set for speakers, how many and what kind.
There are some other areas that can be checked, but look into this first.

The settings in the mutimedia says audio playback device selected:cm838 PCI Playback(DC00)...seems correct right?Where do i d-load drivers and i do i install it?

win 98 and windows media player version 7.1 When you say the sound is bad, what do you mean? Is there a lot of static? Is the sound distorted? Is the sound really soft? Did the sound ever work correctly?
What kind of computer system is it? INTEL or AMD? Do you know the specs?
If the sound did work correctly before but now is bad, was anything new installed just before the problem started? Hardware or software?
Have you checked in Device Manager to see if the sound card is sharing resources with another device?

:) Cricket What i mean by bad is that the sound is really soft,i mean when i use musicmatch and plug the speaker into the line-in plug i could really hear the bass...
the system is a intel pentium 2 400mhz that's all the specs i know
as far as i know the prob has always been here,an only new hardware added was a sony cd-rw drive
i don't know how to do htis...

Hi sam21,
Why are you plugging your speakers into the line-in plug? You should be plugging them into the line-out plug. Are you plugging the bass module into the line-in plug? It should plug into one of the other speakers.
Do you know if that computer has a sound card or on-board sound.
To check for device conflicts, right click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties. When the System Properties box pops up, click on the Device Manager tab and then click on the Properties button. In the IRQ list that shows up, look for the sound card then see if the IRQ number is shared with another device.
What you could try is go to Device Manager and remove the sound device from the list and then reboot the computer. Hold the Shift key while the computer is booting up and you'll be taken to Windows Safe Mode. Get to Device Manager again and remove the sound device from there too. Reboot to normal Windows. Windows will find the sound device again and re-install the drivers.

Don't reboot mean install windows all over and lose all your documents?Aaand i accidently removed the joystick sound device...is that bad?well now i can't play musicmatch because it says wave out format not supported and windows media player can't be heard into any plugs!!!I am sooooooooo screwed!!!!!!someone help!!!!!!!!

sam21,
No, a reboot does not mean you lose all your files and documents.
If you made some changes to your configuration, a reboot is necessary for the changes to take affect.

Hi sam21,
Reboot just means to restart your PC again.
I'm not much for multimedia stuff, so I really can't help you sort this all out. Maybe someone is knows more about multimedia will come by and help you out.

Hi sam21,
Okay, I'll try again.
Does the computer boot up into Windows at all?
Have you tried uninstalling all the media players besides MS Media Player?
When you hit Ctrl Alt Del, in the box that pops up is there a lot of programs listed?
By the clock, is there a lot of icons?
Do you guys download a lot of stuff off the net?
Have you tried updating Media Player to version 8?
If the problem has always existed, maybe the sound drivers weren't installed or are the wrong ones.
Go to Control Panel Multimedia and see what sound device is the default one. Is it the on-board sound device?
You should try to find out as much about that system as possible and then list the specs. It would really help to know what motherboard is in use as well as the other components inside.
Are you using a dialup (modem) or broadband (cable or DSL)?
Can you boot the computer into Safe Mode? Turn on the computer and hold the shift key. That will take you straight to Safe Mode.

Hi sam21,
Can you list the 9 programs from Task Manager.
Have you checked for viruses?
Have you checked for spyware? If not, get Ad-Aware (do a Google search).
Have you checked for trojans? If not, get The Cleaner (do a Google search).
Go to Control Panel Multimedia and see what sound device is the default one. Is it the on-board sound device?
Seems that the Media Player 8 was halted because of privacy issues. Media Player 9 will be next.
You could try using System Information (Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Information) to get some information about your system...but I don't remember if it will tell you the motherboard make and model. You may have to open the computer case and take a look at what's inside.
Have you tried using DXDIAG yet? Go to Start> Run> type in DXDIAG and hit Okay. You can test your sound and video.
Have you checked the IRQ list to see if the NIC isn't sharing it's IRQ with the sound device? It's important the IRQ's don't share between devices.
Since you can get to Safe Mode, go to Device Manager (hit the Windows key and the Pause/Break key) and then find the sound device and remove everything in that branch. Reboot to normal Windows.

hey sam, you gotta cool it with the bumping, man. it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a response faster; as a matter of fact, some people might totally disregard this and not help you at all. just be patient. ok? :)
i still don't get how you're getting any sound at all coming out of the line in... with the line-in, devices plug in to get their sound out into the system, no output at all comes out. plug everything into the line-in, because that's where it belongs. then we'll troubleshoot from there.
have you checked the internal windows settings for the volume? if you have it turned way down, then that might effect it.
also, have you double checked all the plugs on the speakers (i think on those everything plugs into the sub, but i'm not 100% sure). make sure everything is tight.

you've got a 3-piece speaker setup, right? well, if i'm not mistaken (which i could be), the sub plugs into the computer, and then from that, branches out to the speakers. if you check to make sure the speakers are tightly plugged into the sub, it might fix your problem. if for some reason the speaker cable were to come loose, that could explain the faint sound.

Windows Media Player 8 was released for a short time, but Microsoft pulled the download off the site because of some privacy issues with the way Media Player 8 worked.
Try using Find (Start> Find) to see if you even have DXDIAG or DXTOOLS on that system. You should at least find DXDIAG in the Windows/System Folder.

For you shutdown problems, try this troubleshooting site: Windows Resource Center (http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm)
I already explained how to get to the Device Manager.
You're missing DirectX? You need DirectX in order to do multimedia. Go here for the latest version: DirectX Home Page (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.asp)

Cricket
07-22-2002, 08:21 PM
Is the CMI8338/C3DX PCI the only device using IRQ 5 and IRQ 11? If it's sharing IRQ 5 or IRQ 11 with other devices, that's the problem.
What IRQ is the video card using? What IRQ is the NIC (network card for the Road Runner cable modem) using?

SiS 530 is the chipset used on the motherboard of your computer. It features built-in VGA video. Since you said the sound is also built-in, you have to make sure you have the correct drivers for the sound, video and chipset. Download and run Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html), it will tell you what motherboard is in use in your computer. Post that information here.
Exactly how old is this computer? The SiS 530 was used on Socket 7 and Super Socket 7 motherboards, that's about 4 or 5 years ago. If Windows has always been on that system without a clean re-install, it will have degraded quite a bit.
