Modem - No Dial Tone Selected

Hi,

I have come across too internal modems in the last week where by after a re-installation of Windows 98, we could not detect a dial tone after trying to connect to the Internet.

I have followed the M$ help troubleshooter (Making a new location, checking telephony settings, re-installing the driver, and removed the Com Ports). I installed my external modem and it worked first go. The only solution that I could find with the first modem instance was to recommend a replacement internal modem. That worked fine, but I don't want to tell people they have to replace their modem if this problem can be fixed. :)

If you go to the control panel, select the modems icon, and do a diagnostic on the modem, does it find the modem and work correctly?

Diagnostic may be on the second tab within the modem properties (I'm on NT here and can't quite remember.)

Yeah... for some reason the modem I could get the information from the modem diagnostic utility but still could not connect?

They ONLY thing I suspect is that it could be a conflict with the mouse (COM Port 1 & 3 drama), but as to remedy this, I am not to sure. What are some 'classic' symptoms that it is associated with the conflicts between two COM Ports?

If the modem diagnostic queries the modem and displays information on it fine, I would be inclined to rule of the possiblity of a com port conflict.

Are you able to try a different cable, Silly question but does the phone work in the socket the modem is pluged in to?

Yeah, I installed my external swannsmart 56k to it, and it worked like a charm...

Any more idea's???

Com 1 and Com 3 are notorious for conflicting with each other. The best thing to do with an internal modem is DISABLE com 2 in CMOS and install the internal modem on Com 2. If the modem is plug and play, make sure to remove Com 2 from device manager.

Thanks to all for their help on this one! I took the modem back to the store and they replaced it with no problems.
