I have a PC with Win95 on it that loads the WIN95 screen then sits at a C:\ prompt..I have to then type 'win' & it boots ok.

I figure the boot files are corrupt but I have tried sys c:\ which seemed to transfer the system files ok but I still have this problem.

Also, if I run Win95 setup from within windows I get a SUWIN error..it wont let me install into another directory either.

Anyone know what I need to do to restore the boot files?

Formattings not an option as it has business data on it.

cheers

Sounds like something in your autoexec.bat file
If you dont know much about that file
could you copy and post what is contained in the file and we should be able to tell you if it's anything in that file!
You may have installed something or ran something that added and entrie to the BAT file as I call it!
You don't sound like you in danger of loosing your data at this point, but if it's truly critical business data, I hope you are backing up data somehow!!

P. S. I like your slogan!!

Check to see if you have the files AUTOEXEC.WIN and CONFIG.WIN, if so, run the following commands.

RENAME CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.XXX
RENAME AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.XXX
RENAME CONFIG.WIN CONFIG.SYS
RENAME AUTOEXEC.WIN AUTOEXEC.BAT

All of the above, and:

If I remember right, "win" should be the last line in the autoexec.bat file.

Post it might be a good idea, as ktkendall suggests.

Ok, HAL9000 I had the AUTOEXEC.WIN and CONFIG.WIN files there in c: so I did as you suggested & rebooted..still stuck.

And theres NOTHING in my autoexec.bat file OR my c:\config.sys file..??

Probably a quick fix is to put the "win" entry into your current autoexec.bat file, but that doesn't actually fix the prob, just a work around. Sinct the MSCONFIG utility is not available in Win95 you'll have to manually look at win.ini or sys.ini and you may find prob in there. I think you can do a 'sysedit' from the run box in win95 and will bring up those files for you to edit. There is another file that has somethingto do with dos also, dont remember the name, msdos.sys, and I think there is an .ini file in there too that has to do with dos parameters!

OK I've decided to copy over the saved data & format the drive & now I get a 'bad command or file name' error when I try 'setup' from a A:\ DOS prompt, so I figure the original 95 boot disk doesnt contain a setup.exe file...I have checked the directory & there doesnt seem to be one present.

I've had a look around on bootdisk.com & have d/l a few of their BD's but none of them seem to work & in fact none of them seem to have a setup.exe file?

Any ideas?

I think you didn't have a major problem before just a command line in win.ini, but sounded like windows was still healthy and intack. Now that you've formatted and started over looks like a fresh new much bigger prob. Doesn't win95 on floppy use like 10 or 12 disks??? If so I would assume you need to be sure you are starting with the correct one. If your sure your starting with the correct disk, keep digging for the setup file. Maybe it is in a directory, or actually called something else.(ie. install.exe) look around on that disk you should be able to find it. I've never done win95 from floppies, so maybe someone who has will join in here!

HEY N_F_C;
As I finished that last post and was thinking about it, I would think with win95 floppy install, there would have to be the bootdisk that you can FDISK, and format from, but I wouldn't expect the setup.exe to be on that disk, I would expect that to be on Disk 1 of X. Like I said I've never done the win95 install from floppy but I would think you use bootdisk to boot, then put disk 1 in and run setup or install. You won't find the OS disks anywhere like bootdisk.com, just the bootdisks! Like I said I never did this so if I'm wrong, hopefully someone familiar with this install will join this one to give you a definitive answer!
