when i first turn on my computer and the boot up process starts up, it will stop and the screen has this on it............
microsoft windows 98 start up menu
1.normal
2.Logged (\bootlog.txt)
3.safe mode
4.step by step
5.command prompt only
6.safe mode command prompt only
my system used to just boot up without stopping at this screen. i dont understand why it does it. and how can i make it so it will boot up without me hitting enter on Normal. and also somtimes when the desk top will appear on boot up the system will shut down and restart. it will do this sometime two or three times. what the heck is going on and how do i correct this?

Hi Liquid_X_Trance,

Did you install anything new prior to this problem starting up? Did anything unusual happen prior to the problem?

Go to Start> Run and type in msconfig and hit Okay. When the System Configuration Utility pops up, click on the Advanced button and then see if the Enable Startup Menu is checked. If it is, uncheck it and hit Okay.

If that option isn't checked, see if you can boot to Windows Safe Mode (hold the Shift key after the first boot screen switches to the next). Let us know what happens.

cricket thanks for the info my systems boots up without stopping at that screen.and yes i installed a logitech mouseman dual optical mouse in the usb port. it worked for a few minutes than i had trouble. so now i have it plugged in the PS/2 port. after i had trouble with it my system was booting up in safe mode and i think i had an error message windows needed to be reloaded or something. well, anyways i guess i will save that one for a new thread, thanks for you help.

The computer system automatically shuts down and restarts mostly because something is wrong with the power supply. Kindly check your powersupply.
