When I boot up, it goes to the selector screen. If I try to boot in normal mode, I get a windows protection error. If I boot in safe mode, I get the message "while initializing device NKTERN there was a windows protection error", and am prompted to restart the computer. I tried going to the command prompt and running skandisk /surface /all and found no results. On the rare occasion my computer does boot up it is in 16 color and smallest resolution yet when I try to change settings I am told to restart, only to find the same problem. Finally, my internet connection seems to have dissapeared.
Please help

Hi renrelymmas,
We need more information. What OS are you using? What are the system specs (brand name and model number of all parts if you know them or brand name and model number of PC if store bought retail PC).
Did you install anything new just prior to this happening?

Sorry, my specs are now in my sig. Nothing has been installed recently. I've had this system for about 6 months now and this problem just occured.
I hope it's not the RAM. The article you linked said "Run the Windows 98 Setup program from Safe Mode Command Prompt Only."
How do I do that? I don't know any DOS commands. Thanks.

Hi renrelymmas,
Check out these site for information on NTKERN errors:

I'm friends with renrelymmas, so I'm speaking on his behalf.
First, thanks for the links. However, all but the second one link to the same thing eventually. The second one describes a slightly different problem than the one he has.
Also, can someone please tell us how to "Run the Windows 98 Setup program from Safe Mode Command Prompt Only." Neither of us know any DOS commands.
Thanks!

Hi renrelymmas & KlumpDud,
The articles seem to suggest bad RAM. At this point, if you have more than 1 stick of RAM I would remove all but 1 and try the system. Or swap all the RAM with known good sticks.
If you want to try what is suggested in the MS Knowledge Base article: "Restart your computer, press and hold the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only." Follow the above and once you get to the blinking cursor at c:\, type in cd windows and hit Enter. From the c:\windows prompt, type in setup and hit Enter again. The setup program should start up.

If a mobo is capable of handling PC-2100 DDR RAM, can you "downgrade" and put PC-133 RAM in it?
The reason I ask it because the only good RAM we have to test on his computer is PC-133.

Hi guys,
You can't use PC133 in place of PC2100. SDRAM and DDR RAM are physically different in the number of pins used and I think the slot keying is different. DDR RAM might be longer too (I haven't built a box with DDR RAM yet :( ). Anyway, one won't fit in the other's slot.

Thanks.
It turns out he had the "I love you" virus.
That solves that problem.
Time to install win2k.
Bye all!
