So what's your favorite tweaking proggies and methods? I want to make this old system work as good as possible.
I did a search for a thread I can remember about people's programs they couldn't live without, but can't find it.
TIA!

Hi TimPoet,

The first thing I do once Win98SE is installed is turn off Animate Windows, disable Active Desktop, set the File System to Network server, add the line "ConservativeSwapFileUsage" to the [386Enh] section in System.ini, install TweakUI, turn off Task Manager, put the programs I use most in the Quick Launch tray, clean up the desktop and put the Resource Meter in the systray.

:) Cricket Thanks, Cricket. Where do I turn Animate Windows off at? My system.ini says "ConservativeSwapFileUsage=0," do I get rid of the "=0"?
How do I turn off the Task Manager (do you mean Scheduled Tasks)? How do I put the Resource Meter in the systray (where are they to begin with)?
TIA for the kind help.

TIA for the kind help. To disable Animate Windows, right click on the desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Effects tab and you'll see the check box on the left.

Change the zero to a 1 for ConservativeSwapFileUsage.

Double click on the Scheduled Tasks icon by the clock and then click on Advanced> Stop using Task Scheduler. If the icon isn't in the systray, it's not enabled.

Open Windows Explorer and go to c:\Windows. In the right windows, look for RSRCMTR.EXE. Take that file and put a copy or shortcut into the c:\Windows \Start Menu \Programs \Startup folder. When you boot up, you'll see the Resource Meter in the systray...will be 4 green bars.

As you use Windows and programs, the number of green bars will drop. When you get the yellow bar, your resources are getting low. When it turns red, shut down some programs to recover system resources...might turn yellow again, might turn green. If it stays red even after you've shut down all programs, reboot your system. If you place your cursor over it, you'll get a display showing how much System, User and GDI resources are left.

The Resource Meter is not the System Monitor...I don't use that one.

Great tips Cricket!
I have a question on tweaks, i loaded from a disc from pc magazine and have tried from download. Each time I go to run I get message " tweak likes to run from control panel etc." I click yes to install and it asks for a Tweaks disc, then adv it can't find file required to run program. I figured loading from disc would be no prob, but no luck... Any ideas?
Thanks again (and again) for the help
