I am trying to put in a new HD in my comp I'm using win98 first editon I believe
I 'm able to format and install the OS but soon as I install the Video drivers for my ATI rage 129 card the system crashs or keeps rebooting or screen goes black

Hi All,

Try a different power supply if you can! I recently fixed two units doing the same, and after much hair pulling, it turned out to be flakey power supplies !!

Thanks for the input Tworails
I'm believe it has something to do with the video drivers and win98 set up. If it was the power supply you would think that it would not work with my other HD I still have my other HD intact, which I'm using now I just switch(unplug one and plug in other) HD to log on to the web and get my comp up and running

Hi bds66,

We need more information.

What kind of system is that...home built or store bought name brand?

What are your system specs? Provide the name and model of all the parts if you know them. What brand and wattage is the power supply?

What did you do prior to the problem showing up? Did you install anything new? Did you have a really bad crash? Do you think you may have gotten a virus or trojan lately?

Can you get into Safe Mode?

What kind of background programs do you have starting up with Windows?

What have you tried to fix the problem?

OK... sorry it took so long to get back.. I just tried a new power supply and it is not making a differance.. This all happened after a lightning storm.

It can get into safe mode that is what is making me thing windows now.. But also power supply. As far as I know these people kept there virus patterns up to date. Well I will remove some drivers and see what happens.

If you guys have any other ideas let me know...

This was built by a local computer shop.

Hi bds66,

Lightning storm? Try removing the modem or NIC and see if the system behaves itself. Might have gotten zapped.

Not the modem or nic... Video card is out along with power supply... The power supply just crakced a little bit ago and I tore it apart and found a blow capaciter.

Next question is.. Where the hell is the video driver... On the board it says Ensoniq on the sticker it says 3dfx banshee... I cant find anything for Ensoniq video cards.. And the 3dfx driver didnt work???

Any ideas?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean

but I just downloaded a diagnose program caled
"Fresh Diagnose" from a website called www.freshdevices.com it.s a cool program you got to try it it will tell you a lot of info about your computer even run benchmarks.

In order to get my comp back into normal mode and out of safe mode I had to go into display/advanced/adapter/change/-when you pull up change your video card should be listed there-/next/then check box that says display a list of all drivers/you can reinstall your drivers or show all drivers and use standard vga drivers.
this should get you back into normal mode:rolleyes:

Whoopee I finally got it

I had to update my AGP drivers for my mother board for the new Hard drive. it was not easy though
First I had to download to a floppy as a zipped file then I had to install winzip on a CD and put it on the new hard drive then unzip the AGP drivers and install them.
If I tried to install them unzipped from the floppy i was getting a error message saying it was not a valid win 32 app.

whoopee :D
