did a clean install of win98 on my friends old win95 pc. during the installation, an error message appeared saying that a file called msnp32.dll could not load. hit next or whatever we had to to continue the installation. once 98 was done installing i went to start-run-winipcfg but the ip configuration box would not appear and it gave an error message about a file missing. everytime i restart pc i get this message: "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
vnetsup.vxd
Press a key to continue."
I then press any key a couple of times and a window opens telling me I'm missing a dynamic link library file called msnp32.dll
can i pull these files from the win98 cd or should i just try reinstalling the os again? thanks for any help

Hi djfunktion,
You can use sfc (System File Checker) to extract the msnp32.dll file from the Win98 CD. I'm not sure about the vnetsup.vxd file though.
MS Knowledge Base Article: Q243431 msnp32.dll (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q243431&)
MS Knowledge Base Article: Q137454 vnetsup.vxd (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q137454&)

As for vnetsup look here http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21192&highlight=w98se+error+code
Please note that I have never done this straight after an install, only on a system that has been running for a while. Sort ou the msnp32.dll first.

Copy the file from your desktop to your windows\system folder. If the file already exists then rename the original and then copy the one from your desktop. Restart.

Just curiuos dj did you fix the error problem??
i just had the excact same error problems took a while to fix and a lot of research was very frustraing
I'm not sure excactly what I did to fix it, the msnp. error message I think had something to do with a network (internet) files I disabled the network and it went away.
I also had dsf.vxd error and
vnetsup.vxd error
Like i said I'm not sure what i did to fix it I had done so many different things.
one thing I had thought I might have done, it may seem ilrelavent, was I had unplugged my CD player after i replugged it in they went away , maybe a coincidence

hey gladiator,
actually no cause it was my brother-in laws pc in a different state and it was too hard trying to explain what to do over the phone. so I had him reinstall the OS and all files loaded fine the second time.
if I come across the problem again in the future I will post it here.

ok DJ
I did a clean install of win98 and had no error messages until I installed my drivers for my DSL then I got the error messages , so reinstalling the win98 would not have helped me.

Remove everything from network properties, reboot, re-install previously removed items.

ah yes HAl easier said then done.
I took a guess and did remove anything from network properties and did reboot it did get rid of the msnp.dll error!!
The errors said it was searching for an old installed program or hardware, ok, but it was a new install of win 98 and I had not removed anything yet ,unless when you format and reinstall you don't actually get rid of all the old files and it actually was sensing some old system files??
because I had removed one of my CD players from the cable, I had 2 . when I plugged the other Cd player back in and rebooted I no longer got the error messages?? go figure
