Installing modem

Never tried this step, but currently have an internal and external(USR's) on 1 pc using multilink nicely. Tried using the Express external in extra serial port and of course, naturally Windows doesn't see it. I can add it under new hardware but it sets it up on Com 1, same as existing external. Weird that no "device conflicts" are showing. Sysedit shows 4 Com Ports. How can I force it to set up on different Com Port?

Dump all your com ports and modems out of device manager. Shut down and jumper your internal modem to Com 3 IRQ 5. Go into CMOS and set Com 1 and Com 2 to standard specs (Com 1 is 3F8 IRQ 4 and Com 2 is 2F8 IRQ 3). Boot back up and make sure all 3 com ports are seen by Windows. if not, use the add new hardware wizard to find them. You can now use the add modem wizard to find and install all 3 modems with no conflicts.

glc, thanks. I don't care to have the OEM internal (USR) that came with the Gateway. It bogs down in multilink, decreasing throughput less than just using 1 modem. It's on Com2. My concern is the extra serial port for external. I'd like to use these 2 serial ports if possible, for the USR external and Express external. When I plug the Express into the extra port, all the lights come on the modem. Weird and confusing. Something ain't kosher, so I'll remove the internal USR winmodem and use my internal Boca Tidalwave. Hacks me when I get stumped. Was wanting to see how 2 externals handled multilink.

Maybe the short cable from the port to the mobo is reversed inside the case. I've seen a few like that from the factory. I guess they assume nobody will ever use external com 2.

OK - didnt know your internal was a winmodem. I assumed it was a Sportster with jumpers. If the Boca is jumperable, follow the instructions previously posted. If its plug and play only, follow the instructions except allow the Boca to set itself where it wants. It will prolly go to Com 3 on god only knows what IRQ. If you want to force it to IRQ 5 (prolly the best place for it as long as you dont have an ISA sound card) just reserve IRQ 5 for ISA devices in the CMOS. With 3 modems, you don't want any of them sharing IRQ or port addresses if you want to use them all.

I have my internal Sportster (jumpered to Com 2) sharing IRQ (3) with my external Hayes (on Com 4) but I can and do only use 1 at a time. You can get away with this only if neither device is plug and play. This is prolly what's causing your problems.

Thanks. I removed the winmodem and from device manager. Installed the Boca which ended up on Com 2 like the Winmodem was. I still wanted the Express external, but see above post. I'll settle in for awhile, connecting at 90+.
