You can't.

There are programs that claim to be able to undelete files, some work really well. On a floppy if you haven't put anything else on it or haven't done a full format they should work very well. When you delete files on a floppy from Windows it doesn't actually delete the data just the file allocation table. So your files are still there.

I stand corrected then.

Somehow I knew about those programs, but I thought they only worked with hard drives.

When you delete something, it puts a '?' in front of it which tells the OS to skip it and write over if necessary.

At least this is how I think it worked for DOS. Not sure if this is right, or how it works nowadays. Someone correct me please. :)

Real close. It replaces the first character of the filename with a ? - and when you ran the old Dos "undelete" you would have to tell it what character to replace the ? with. Undelete was strictly Dos 6.22 or earlier, I don't know how it handles long file names, if at all. I suppose you could put that floppy in a Dos 6.22 or earlier system and try running undelete and at least get the files back, although with truncated file names.

You've got a very good chance of recovering the data so long as you have not written anything to the disk after the deletion. Of course you need the undelete software to do it.

I used Lost and Found on an old hard drive a while ago

Worked a treat
