I just spent literally hours downloading a .mpeg video file.
I cant play it on the Windows media player. I can perfectly play .mpg files.
Does anyone know if I need some sort of codec or something to play it?
What version of WMP do you have? Try downloading the latest version available for download (7.1 I think)

Thats what I have v7.1.
No use.
Hi,
*.mpeg and *.mpg files are the same. But there are 2 different MPEG codecs, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. While MPEG-1 is freeware and supported by every playback software such as Media Player, there are license costs for MPEG-2, so it is not integrated in Windows Media Player or most other free players, no matter which version.
Looks like your MPEG file is MPEG-2. You need either a MPEG-2 codec (there is a trial available from Elecard, with a watermark on the upper right corner unless you register) or a playback software which supports MPEG-2, which would be all DVD playback softwares such as PowerDVD and WinDVD.

Sometimes all you need to do is get the latest Div X codec. Get it at www.divx.com that might help.

Sometimes those softwares RJ mentioned come bundled in the video cards CDs.
Nuc is right here. I forgot about that.
I think the ATI cards come all with a DVD player. You can use this.
My GeForce 2 came with PowerDVD. Might be worth to take a look at the CDs.
DivX should not help. Although based on MPEG-4, it comes as AVI, but I've never seen it as MPEG.

Interesting story;
Some videos that I have were in .MPEG format... wmp didn't play them but when I renamed them to .MPG they were good.
(it was just to see what would happen they were not important or anything :)
