Hey, I just noticed something wierd. When I hover above the IE tool bar icons, they show something different than their purpose. For instance, the forward and back arrows work the way they should but when I hover over them, the tip says "Cut" and "copy" When I hover over the Stop (red ball with X) it show "paste".
Refresh = encoding; Home = Print Preview.

So I go to Toolbars, customize and the labels there are the same incorrect ones. I mean everything works just the tool tips are wrong. I have them set for small icons and no text labels.
(the text labels are correct)
This is IE 6.0 But I just looked at an IE5.5 and it does the same thing.
Should I remove this HD and burn it while holding a chicken over my head? or what.
Correction it is only the two 6.0s doing it.

A virus perhaps? Or a corrupted registy?

I run vscan every week with updated definitions. Reg? maybe.
Anybody else see this with 6.0?

Hi Jomama, Dr Z, NucKruc, et al:

Just out of curiousity, did you install DirectX 8.1 after your first installation of IE6? ....and then the wierdness happened?

I wonder if IE6 displays better with a reinstall & the current DirectX already in place. I've seen a few pcs whose IE6 taskbars have trouble displaying correctly when in "Full Screen" mode - but minimizing & then maximizing the window clears up the problem (seems to usually happen if scrolling while a large page is still loading)

Did you re-install from the same ie6setup.exe file you downloaded for the first install, or did you download the latest version? (or did you choose "Repair" from the System Information Tools menu?)

I might try that reinstall trick on one of the oddly displaying IE6 machines later this weekend & post the result.

I finally solved all my IE wierdness, foibles, and annoying habits by downloading OPERA

http://www.opera.com/

No more pop-up windows, fast browsing, multiple pages in one browser frame . . . what more can I say. ;)

On trying the repair, IE said it counldnt, so I reinstalled from the original DL
I dont recall but I dont think I upgraded the directx after theIE.
But something had to corrupt it.

Thanks for the replies: I'm going to try reinstalling IE6 on a Amd K6-III 333 later, when I get home from work. You know how games display better sometimes if you reinstall them after a DirectX update, I was just wondering if a browser might be affected somehow too (though I'd imagine it's use of DirectX would be much more limited than a game)

[your pc was the 1st I've heard of that changed the names of the icons ... on the three older machines which have toolbar display oddities, it's only cosmetic - say, a graphic from the loading page showing through the toolbar - as if the toolbar was partly transparent]

Sorry, Jomama, not very sporting of me, was it? I'm still creeped out over losing my Word program - just evaporated into thin air without a trace. Started to question my sanity, but I have loads of Word docs in my files to prove it REALLY was there . .

I am usually very carefull of what I install on the P3-450,(the IE6).
DLs, I usually install on this K6-233 or a P133 and if I like it or it doenst crash,I might put it on the P3-450.
so I dont know what happened, it was the weirdest thing I have seen.
