hmm, i'm interested in what OS you are using, and what DVD drive you have. DVD encoding lets you play DVD's. You need it, and it should have been on there (that is why I ask what OS and DVD drive you have). I usually have been able to play DVD's however right after I install my DVD player. If using windows, try just playing it in MediaPlayer. If you can then disreguard that error and then download your preferred DVD player.

I have, haowever, had DVD's that recommend I download a certain player off the internet to play it (total BS, they are just promoting another product). Also I remember in the days of old, when DVD drives were new, some of them needed constant driver updates (!?). A little more about your system and what is installed could help. Although this all may reveal my stupidity on the subject.

(really, all you might need is a dvd playing software)

Checking websites now, it's win2000 on an IBM thinkpad, with a mat****a 6x dvd. I bet the company took the dvd software off the machine as it is my works laptop, there are no games either!

Didn't realize my brand of dvd player got bleeped out but I guess now that I look it kind of does have a cus word embedded in there, was not trying to imply anything about them or use inappropriate slang here its just the brand name!

there is no operateing system that has a encoder built in.

the only program that has it built in is the ati all in wonder video card.

You don't need an encoder unless you want to create your own DVDs. For DVD playback you need a DVD playback software (a DEcoder).

yeah what he said

A little different note how can I tape DVD's onto VHS tapes They are all coded (most of them) and come out all messed up, the movie from the dvd player will come out messed up even if I just run it through my video player to the tv. my one TV does not have audio jacks!! :(

Why in the world do you want to degrade DVD's terrific quality to a low-quality-VHS ?

Well I got a VHS in my bedroom that I put my dvd player hooked up to but I can't watch the DVD's through the VHS they turn all red and squiggly even if I'm not recording it. my only option would be to buy another TV with Audio-video inputs the tv in my bedroom only has a cable (coaxial) hook ups and no audio-video(analog) plugs??

My hook up in the bedroom is cablebox/DVD/VHS/TV. like I said the DVD has no coaxial only analog hook ups

In my living living my bigscreen has audio-video inputs so i got no problem there I can just switch the Tv to video input and it works fine!

I see.

Problem is Macrovision. Its purpose was to prevent DVD copying (therefore you see this ugly picture).
If you can disable Macrovision you can copy the DVD. Not sure how to do this with standalones, but with a PC with TV out and tvtool it works fine.
