How do I stop Win ME from installing its own drivers if it finds drivers for my hardware in its database ?

TIA :)

I wanna install my own drivers because now when I try to record Mp3's with the Win ME drivers I do not have the different sound qualities to choose from because the Win ME drivers are not that good :(

Win ME would not allow me to put on my own drivers :(

Anyone here with the trick I need ?

TIA again :)

Select the device in device manager, properties, driver tab. Update driver, have disk, browse to YOUR drivers.

Hi reboot. That does not work for me. I have tried it a lot of times but when I look at the drivers tab, I still see " Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher" instead of not signed :(

Did Win ME get a mind of its own ?

BTW. I already tried adding hardware in the control panel.

I have had the same problem with the drivers although not all of my drivers are M$ windows drivers. Or is this a case of father kwows best, I mean ME knows best!

Strange problem, it doesn't seem to be affecting me though. I originally had driver problems with my AIW card. I installed the WinME ATI driver and it didn't help either. I updated the driver with ATI special purpose drivers and everything works fine now.

Hey, I'm glad to see the addition of the WinME section to pcmech. Been reading all the good stuff and just had to toss in my two cents. I got hold of a copy of WinME a few weeks before the release date and did a clean install on my puter and haven't looked back since. i've forgotten what the BSOD looks like as well as the annoying sudden lock up's. Now that I've been using it for several weeks I've experienced a few minor crashes (all self inflicted of course), however, one of ME's features I've come to love is the "RESTORE" thingy. After I've installed anything new to my system, I run it for a few days and create a new restore point if everything is working good, I also create a new restore point just prior to installing new software/hardware or doing any major tweaking. This way if anything goes sour I'll be able to get it back to ship shape. Anyway, it works great and I think I'll keep it :D

My sys specs are:

AMD Athlon 800 OC'd to 1000
KA7-100 mobo
256 Mb PC-133 (crucial)
40 Gig ATA-100 7200 RPM Maxtor
Acer 4x4x23 R/W/RW
Afree 10/40 DVD
Creative Riva TNT-2
Creative SB Live

This puppy screams .... I love it !! (I can't believe I built the whole thing ... haha)

Thanks Hacker, I don't think it'll ever be done though, it started out as an Athlon 500 system and has grown to this behemoth. I think the only stuff left from the original system is the DVD, FDD, and CDRW. Isn't it strange how things evolve .... LOL :)
