I have upgraded to XP about 3-4 months ago. I used to have 98se and ME. About two years ago I bought a UMAX Astra2100U scanner and I loved it; it worked great on 98/ME. After upgrading to XP i noticed that the native XP drivers for my scanner only supported basic scans at low resolution, and that is it, nothing else at all.
I proceeded to the Umax site (N. American version) and went ot download some updated drivers. Guess what? I found that they want $15 dollars for the driver (they only provide it on a CD). This is in spite of the page right before it that says "All drivers are free for download...." I thought "what the hell? Are they trying to rip me off!?" Well, of course they are. I also need to download an XP patch to put on top of the new drivers, and that FTP just happens to be the only one out of every site I visit that won't work.
I went to the UK version of the UMAX site, and found that thier drivers are free for download, and they provide a reliable HTTP link for the additional XP patch. I was wondering, will the UK drivers work on my version of XP that I bought in America? I really would feel I was being cheated by Umax if I had to pay for extra things to "fix" thier scanner that I payed good money for already, especially when the Europeans can get it for free.
Will the drivers not be compatible? It is still in English.
(i did send Umax a somewhat nasty email describing how upset I was and how I will never buy another Umax scanner for my scanning needs. I hope they feel ripping off half of thier customer base is worth losing the other half that refuses to take part in thier little money scam. Oh well, another company bites the dust, I hope)
