EZ-CD 3??? with XP? You need version 5 to work properly.

is there any way that i can get rid of Easy CD Creator and just use nero?? i don't feel like spending 80 bucks on something when my friend can give me a better program for free.

Watch how you use the term "give me for free" around here as piracy is a major no-no and if warnings are not taken seriously, the boot can be.

Just run the uninstall of Easy CD to nuke it.

i have tried uninstalling it but it still has the conflict even when it's gone. And since there is a conflict nero won't work.

Try unininstalling Nero, and reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, there is a Microsoft article for a registry hack that I had to use when ECDC5 took out my CD's. It works but it is very tedious, and if you don't understand what they are saying and follow the instructions to the letter, you'll end up reinstalling XP like I did the first time I had to use it. The second time, I passed the learning curve, and it worked like a charm, but was still a real pain.

Go to Roxio's site they have step by step directions for removing EZ CD Creator from your system. EZ CD makes changes to your registry that uninstalling from ADD/REMOVE Programs will change. There are people that claim they can get them both to work properly on the same machine but I haven't been able to do so.

But to even have a shot at making them both work you'll have to set it up so when windows is booting you decide which registry you want to load. The one for Roxio's software or one for Nero.

Tuf, you just reminded me of the major problem with uninstalling ECDC. Do not use Add Remove programs! Uninstall from the CD, and it will remove everything. sockrfreek4 installed the wrong version for XP, so there is no telling what it did.

Well, some burners don't run on EZ cd creator and nero. From my experiences, ASUS works best with Nero and Sony works best with EZ cd creator.

I do remember there were two entries created by EZ CD that had to be deleted before any burning software would work correctly. I'm gonna look through my notes and see if I still have it. I may have discarded them because after my last bout with Roxio I have no intention of attempting to use the program again.

Ye sthis seems to be a major bug with EZ CD - anyway there is a more easy way according to Microsoft Help website - downloading and installing WMP7.1 will take care of the problem - I mean the problem TUF helpful posted here -
I almost lost Win2k becuse of this upper - lower filter thing - and may this I add - Microsoft tells that the CD's getting lost because of UNINSTALLING the program - so care should be taken when unistalling EZ CD any version under 5.0
Just besides - I installed EZ CD 4.2 here yesterday and it works like a charm on Win2K - the Burner is a HP9100..
here a few Excerpts from the MSsoft help base

Cannot Access CD-ROM and Code 31 Error Messages Occur After Removing
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

For a Microsoft Windows XP version of this article, see Q314060.

This article also applies to Adaptec Easy Creator 5.01. IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
SYMPTOMS
After you remove Adaptec Easy CD Creator versions 5.01 and earlier or DirectCD version 3.01 or 3.01c from your computer, your computer may experience the following behavior:
You are cannot access your CD-ROMs in My Computer.
In Device Manager, the following error message occurs with all CD-ROM devices connected to your system:

The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31).
The Device Manager displays the following error code message:

A driver for this device was not required, and has been turned off (Code 32 or Code 31).
NOTE: You may also receive an error code 39 message that indicates that the driver is corrupted.

The Device Manager displays the following error code message:

Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)
This code means that the registry returned an unknown result.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

There are two supported methods to resolve this issue.
Method One
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
NOTE: If you are getting a code 39 message, it may be that additional third-party filter drivers were added to UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in addition to Adaptec filter drivers. In that case, you may try to remove the non-Adaptec filter drivers first, leaving the Easy Creator filters in place to see if the Code 39 goes away. If you still receive an error code 39, 32, or 31 message, remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely in the preceding key.

Restart your computer.
Method Two
If the above method does not resolve the code 31 error message and restore access to your CD-ROMs, if you also have Media Player version 7.0 installed, you can uninstall Media player version 7.0 and download and install the latest release posted at the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia
STATUS
This is a known issue with Easy CD Creator versions 5.01 and earlier, and DirectCD versions 3.01c and earlier.
MORE INFORMATION
This issue may also occur with the latest versions of Easy CD Creator 5.01 and DirectCD 3.01d or later.

The third-party products that are discussed in this article are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

NOTE: There may be other third party CD-Writing Software that exhibit similar behavior. Some or all of these troubleshooting steps can apply to them if they also add entries under the UpperFilters or LowerFilters registry values by either adding their filter drivers or by removing the registry keys and values outlined in this article that start with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
WARNING: Ensure you perform a backup of your registry before you make any changes.

I have had several Dell notebooks come through here lately that have lost their optical drives because uninstalling an oem version of CD Creator 5. Like I said I thought it was a great program prior to XP but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole now. But it does baffle me how some people can run both effectively with no tweaking and others lose all stability by just installing EZ CD.

I tried ten times to make ECDC5 work with my configuration, so I've been through it all. Removing the upper and lower filter keys has worked to restore my CD's after uninstalling ECDC5, but as I said before, uninstalling from Add remove programs will most likely result in losing your CD's. However, if you uninstall from the CD, using that option, everything is removed, and your CD's remain unaffected. It's really strange that ECDC gives trouble with some configurations of hardware/software, becauseI believe [correct me if I'm wrong] Roxio wrote the burning software for XP. I have gotten ECDC5 to work on XP by installing it first, before anything else, but somewhere along the line, after installing everything I want on my computer, it starts to screw up.

Strange indeed,
I have been using it since 1997 DCD & ECDC ver 2.** and have installed it on countless systems and I have never had one problem with this software.

Not all burners support all software. I found that out the hard way. From the looks of your posts that may be your problem.
Also if you have 2 different UDF packet writing software programs installed the will cause a conflict.

The only problem is using it in XP. They all work fine on my system in 9x.
