modem dual ethernet?

Given a computer for a child, it seems to have
3.com ethernet card and aztech 2320 modem, tried to remove modem settings to install new modem but on boot computer installs software for modem and ethernet card.
Just need this pc for homework and occasional internet
Windows 98 with 96mg ram unknown brand name
Can I get ethernet card to work for internet or how do I get rid of aztech 2320 modem.
I removed the card and rebooted but computer still reloaded aztech 2320 drivers
Please help

Uninstall all modem software and remove the modem and ethernet card from the computer. Reboot and you should be OK. If either or both devices are integrated into the motherboard instead of on cards, you will have to disable them either in CMOS or with jumpers instead.

Last resort - just disable them in device manager and the resources should be freed up.

seems to be only one card so dont know where modem is no
connection found on motherboard somebody told me it is
dual ethernet/modem card. Have tried removing it and all
software, even installing a PCI modem which couldnt find a port and locked up the mouse
I must get rid of this somehow or maybe it can be used?

I don't know what that device is - I searched the Aztech site for "2320" and it came up with a sound chip, not a modem or ethernet adapter. Are you sure you are not trying to remove the sound card?

If it's a combination card, it should have 2 or 3 jacks - 1 or 2 RJ-11 jacks for the modem and a RJ-45 jack for the Ethernet. A RJ-11 is a standard phone jack and a RJ-45 is very similar in appearance, just a bit larger.

Have you tried plugging in a phone line and trying to *use* the modem yet?

description fits but windows definetly says modem is Aztech 2320 I know it should be sound card but there are drivers for this in Win 95/8. have tried plugging in phone but really suspect I may need cable connection or ISDN.Any
other help would be gratefully appreciated.

That is a standard 3Com network card. It has a coaxial jack and a RJ-45 jack and is in an ISA slot. It may also have a multipin "D" connector on it for an AUI connector if it's an older model. You can remove this if you aren't using it. It is not a combination card with a modem on it, "combo" means that it has jacks for both UTP (RJ-45) and coaxial cable (BNC) on it.

The modem should be on a separate card - can you find it?

thats it, I have now removed ethernet card and all mention of it and modem, still the same problem Aztech 2320 loads drivers after reboot. Disabled in system, and tried Diamond Supra modem but all it does is locks up system completely.Starting to think maybe ther is hidden softwarebut cant find anything in registry.Thank u again

What model Soundblaster is it?

Try this. Remove ALL com ports from device manager, reboot and go into CMOS and disable Com 2 (Serial port 2, B, however it is identified). Reboot and Com 1 should reinstall. Then shut down and see if the Supra will install.

I have a feeling it's an Aztech sound card in there. Probably says SB compatible somewhere.
