I have a cable internet and I run Jammer (in preference to Zone Alarm). My ISP provides dynamic IP addresses as well. Jammer often reports scanning activity and when I have been scanned several times from the same source I have reported the matter to my ISP and they tell me they have taken action. The thing is the frequency of scanning attacks seems to be on the increase. My son uses Napster, so I was wondering if that may be a cause or are there more and more wannabe hackers out there?
Also when I detect someone scanning me, is there anything I can do to give them some of their own medicine?
Chris.

A lot of the "scans" that you see may not be a scan. It may be a server that you have connected to, but it does not know yet that you have moved on. Many scans may be someone using a port scanner to try to find active IP's, so detecting it doesn't mean a direct attack on you personally. The fact that you are using ZA and it is not responding to the scanners request means that this person has not found an active IP, and therefor cannot locate you.

Yeah, report em if you want, but there's no reason to put any effort into counterattacks, unless you just want to.

The way a firewall works is, the kid sends a request to your machine for info, and without a firewall your machine will respond. The firewall is actually eating up the requests and not sending a response, so to them it looks like your machine is either offline or doesn't exist.

No reson to announce your presence if the firewall did its job to hide your presence.

What port(s) is/are being scanned?
