I'm trying to connect to my Unix shell account with my ISP through Hyperterminal. This is what happens:
1. It dials my ISPs phone number
2. It asks for and I put in the Username and Password
3. It asks for a host
4. I'm stuck
What do I put for host?

Your ISP should have provided you with the name of the host that you account exists on. Get in touch with their tech support for this information.
Hope that helps.

The name of this host would be something like 225.255.225.1 or would it be something like "bob"?

It could conceivably be a name that looked like an IP address but more likely it is a name like "bob'.

So when I call tech support I simply ask what the host name of the computer I have my account on is? Do I need to mention I'm using Unix?

Yes. Just mention you're trying to sign in to your Unix shell acct and need the host name. That should do it.
Good luck.

Well I gave em a call and explained the situation. They said the name I needed was mts.net. I put that in and I got the following:
Translating "mts.net"...domain server (142.161.2.155) [OK]
Trying 205.200.16.72 ...
*Disconnects*
They sure are helpfull. If anyone else feels like trying to get it outa them the number is toll free at: 1-877-638-4255
More and more shell providers these days are requiring ssh or something like that - and I don't think Hyperterminal is secure. You might want to call them back and discuss in detail how to get connected and with what. I have a shell account, but I don't dial into it - I connect to it over the Internet with putty (a ssh client that works like Telnet), all it does is ask me for a login name and password.

ISP is MTS, stand for Manitoba Telecom Services. There website is www.mts.ca They like to call themselves Sympatico also. I don't know if this will help any but the servers I know are:
pop.mts.net
smtp.mts.net
news.mts.net
Good luck and thanks a lot guys!
Is your account a dialup or broadband (DSL)? Either way, I think I would connect the conventional way and ssh into the shell (assuming that they DO offer shell access) rather than trying to dial directly into it. I searched their site for shell and they say that shell accounts are NOT supported.
