Verizon software?

My family will be buying verizon dsl soon, and on the web page it mentioned that we will be sent a software disk.

Does anyone know if this software is necesary for the dsl to work, it will be on four computers connected to a router, or if this is just some useless bundled software?

I've had Verizon DSL for about 2 years now and when I signed up there wasn't any required software. Most likely it's just some more spyware etc. Unless they've change to PPPoE, but your router can handle that.

I suspect that it is the PPoe software. I agree the router should be able to handle that connection w/o the installation of the PPoe software. I do know that there is some issues with the Linksys routers and speedmodem 5200's which require a updated firmware for the modem.

I have been told by a Verizon DSL user that the software is "Winpoet", which is *required* to establish the account on a standalone machine. Once it's set up, you can uninstall it and use your router.

What is "PPPoE" software?

The router I am thinking of buying (SMC Barricade, Router, Model SMC7004ABR Retail) supports PPPoE, does this mean I would not have to install the verizon software?

Also, if the router did NOT support PPPoE then I would just have to install the verizon software on the computers, and the router would still work correctly, right?

Short answer, "No". The router has to support the type of DSL line. If the ISP uses PPPoE, the router has to be capable of supporting it. PPPoA is essentially the same thing over an ATM circuit.

Since the router would be handling all of the line set-up and negotiation, you would not need to install the PPPoE software on the computers. If the router did not support PPPoE, it simply would not work. Installing the PPPoE software on the computer would not correct that. Sorry.

By the way, I use Verizon DSL. Have had it for close to 2 years and only been down twice.
