My last version of RedHatê has finally passed through my CDRW, although I didnt realize it at the time .. it was version 6.2; and it is very doubtful whether I will ever get to RedHatê again.
Its starting to use marketting techniques that made me wait for the inception of the whole philosohpy of Alternative OS, and its getting bloated enough to be shunned. I guess these are the desparate tricks of an IPO issuer to keep afloat. I'd give it 2 years before RedHatå starts getting slapped with legal action for some reason.
The first "wonderful<FONT COLOR="Red">1</FONT>" feature of it is the 5 CDs, I dont know and dont care about them. I can understand bringing out an HA distribution out, but separating Workstation and Server versions demonstrates a dogged determination to go after the M$ desktop, something that even Linus didnt want. I guess Linux allows any schmuck to burn copies of the entire freshmeat repository and call it an apps CD .. as for me I dont like it, if I want something I can download and install it myself! NOT EVEN WINDOWS 2000 comes in 5 Client CDs. How much worse can it get but for a die-hard, fanatical Tux owner to proclaim that!
Separating the server and client configs starts stifling the whole Linux experience .. now RedHatê is just a tool for mouse-pushers. It reeks of Micro$oft Windows 2000 Professional Edition, Micro$oft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
And here's the feature that made me type out 'quit' from ftp.redhat.com ... Its NOT kernel 2.4 .. but a 2.4test kernel and not only are they loath to announce it but they decide to call it kernel 2.4 ready .. that really insults the intelligence of the RedHatê user.
The alternatives, its either back to Slackware for me, or scope out the rest of the Linux world for distributions that are worth the time, mundrake hitherto wasnt, caldera was passable, maybe they will avoid being marketting giants. But BSD has been the best choice for servers for me.
PS: I am so excited about the impending MobileLinux..
This has been my 2 cents.
cheers
