Well, I finally dl IE 5.5 on my work computer. Seems like pages load a lot faster than IE 5. I like the print preview also, quite handy. So far it's rock solid. Anyone else think IE 5.5 is faster and better.

Yup, it's the best release since IE4.01SP2

Hey O-Boy,
You're right, I was a hardcore Netscape user and dumped 4.7 for IE 5.5. IE is now much better. I was having too many problems with Netscape. Not one proplem since I upgraded to IE.

You guys know what I think about IE.....

Fred, most folks preferred NS, including yours truly. NS changed, causing us to change. I'd still go back if'n they made one stable.
reboot

OK, I broke down and tried NS (again...sigh...)
Everything over 4.0 crashed. I mean really crashed, repeatedly.
Finally installed 4 Gold (from an old Maximum PC CD I have), and it runs smoothly. Not exactly a java powerhouse, but it views pages without crashing, just lots of red <font color="Red">X</font>'s on the heavier pages.

Hi guys,
OK...I know that IE is a good browser and it can be faster than NS. I've seen it happen on machines with both browsers installed. However my IE4 days left a bad taste.....I was using NS at this time too and what wouldn't load with IE4 would load with NS. Also NS didn't crash like IE4 used to.
So I chose to use NS....blah blah...
I don't know if it the PC's you guys use or the OS...or both...but NS with 95b (4.7, 4.71, 4.72) does not cause ME any major headaches. I guess if you gotta go 98xx then use IE.....simple as that.
95b & NT4 like NS a lot. Again these are my systems and I can only judge based on these. I am not anti-IE per say, it's just that I choose not to use it.....and I personally think that NS is a better browser anyway.
But you guys know this already.....I'm just re-stating the point and trying not to come across as 'I just hate IE'. I know it has it's good points but so does NS. Pound for pound I like NS on my systems.
I will be more open-minded from now on when it comes to IE5X. I do use it from time to time and it does work great. It's fast and slick and it works! Credit where credit is due, I guess :).

At one time, I felt the same way and was a dedicated Netscape junkie. I ended up in the opposite situation though, Netscape constantly crashed on me, and IE 4 and up did not. Needless to say, I am now a fully converted IE addict.

Hi HAL,
That must be what I am....an addict! Well I'm an NS addict. I'm too hooked to use IE. I do use IE but I need NS. The Net without NS?......I'd sell my PC's....it just wouldn't be the same. NS is my 'drug' of choice and I'm addicted BIGTIME.

Hey Fred,
I used NS "EXCLUSIVELY" until about 4 months ago. I HATED IE 4.0! Maybe your experience is different but I was having too many problems with NS 4.7. I installed IE 5.5 and Netscape is just a bad memory. I suggest you dl 5.5 and just try it. Try both IE and NS. Then decide which you prefer. If NS is working great for you, stick with it.

OK, I'm running IE5.0 and would like to upgrade to 5.5
Is there anything I need to watch out for? What about my favorites, do I need to back them up (if so, how?)?
What's the best way to upgrade?
Since discovering PCMech, I've learned a lot and hope to learn a lot more, so forgive me for any stupid questions...
Thanks
edit: Oh, and my address book & E-mails, do I need to back up those?

Karel: No sincere question is stupid. That is what Q&A sites are for. The knowledgeable helping the needy.
When downloading IE5.5, of course shut down all your running programs (except Explorer and Systray),Anti viruses, set your screen saver on none, and put all your power savers on never. i.e. shut down anything that might introduce itself while your downloading.
Then download IE5.5. You have an approx 50/50 chance of getting a clean/incompatable download. Good Luck to You.

Thanks Juju (love that nick)...
I've got cable, does that reduce the risk of a "damaged" download?
So, I don't need to worry about my favorites, address book etc.?

Cable connection will not damage your download.
Your favourites and address book will be saved, you should not have any problems. I have ugraded 5.5 on a bunch of machines, haven't had any problems with any of them.

I downloaded & installed it. Everything went smoothly, but...
right after the usual reboot, where apparently the system was being updated, I got a message that said that regedit could not be found. Clicking that message away did not give any problems and the rebooting continued.
Then I tried to start regedit from the RUN-command but the file could not be found.
After that, I did a search for regedit and found it in C:\Windows\OPTIONS\CABS. Now, I don't think that's where it's supposed to be, or at least not where it's supposed to be run from. Can anyone tell me where I have to put it?
Does this point to other problems on my system?
Regedit.exe goes into your Windows folder.

There are a few people here who spoke about how bad the earlier version of IE was and it was bad. But IE 4 has to be about 3 years old now and it is absolutely ridiculous to compare that version to IE 5 or 5.5. I mean even a large number of Mac users have switched to IE from Netscape and you have no idea how fanatically opposed they used to be to IE.
As far as Netscape goes, I currently don't see any hope for it since it was bought out by AOL. And anyone who makes Web pages gives first priority to how the their page looks with IE. So it is better to go with the IE trend that everyone else follows in order to have complete compatibility with Web sites. That's not to mention that it is a better browser.
I'm still using IE5 but I wonder if IE5.5 has the multi-web site browser thing. I love to have like five or more different Web sites all loaded and waiting for me.
I once used a small shareware app called Multi-Web Browser and you could set it to load as many Web sites at once as you liked. It loaded them really fast and I really loved that app but it had a time limit and expired and I didn't want to buy it.

I've only been dinking around with pcs for about 10 years, have heard of those systems, everything from win 3.1, 95, 98, browsers, NS & IE where people have nothing but crashes and slow performance.
I have ran all of these, have had a fair share of my own crashes, most notably with win95. Funny, I upgraded to 98, everyone that had 95 had minimal to no crashes, and mine crashed several times every day. with 98 I have yet to have a crash, a blue screen or any other problem.
Programs, those we d/l and install,(like WindowBlinds, LiteStep, ect.) combined with not removing programs the proper way, not keeping our registry clean, ect, ect. that is what seems to cause the high percentage of crashes.
There is a certain procedure to follow in maintaining ones computer, as well as learning some key DOS commands to keep things running smooth, especially for us geekers. It is the average computer user who has yet to learn, or does not care to learn who will experience the largets amount of crashes and then not know how to stop them.
I am also a strong believer in Partition Magic, with the OS on one partition, all other programs on another partition. This cuts down on the time to reformat/clean reinstall. Not to mention that you can have other partitions; one for important files, docs, text, another partition for "temps" and so on. Best money ever spent.
If they could all know about this site, they would soon join us geekers and drastically cut down on the crashes and other problems.
Enjoy your input and the info, keep em coming.

Granted this is a PC forum, but IE is also the best choice if you're running Mac OS. Not only does it come with IE 5, but Netscape crashes constantly and displays pages blocky and void of colors. IE is much more smooth, and the interface looks really cool on a Mac.
