In my manual it says I can use up to 512MB Ram in the SIMMS
slot , but only 256MB if I use the DIMMS. Why can't I use 2
256MB modules in the DIMM slots?
I know I got in touch with HP about max compact flash card
for my digital camera and they said 128MB--- I put in a 256 ,
and it works great, giving me many more pictures.

i think they are one in the same??...simms need 2 chips to make the loop,

and it might only support 2 banks,,, your mobo that is ..

Thanks Zaney. I had read the other thread, I guess it just didn,t register. Which it still might not completely. I want to go to 512
but my manual reads only 256. The Mobo is a Shuttle and is about
8 yrs old. Can I safely make it a 512 and not cause any problems?

Check the Memory Selector at www.crucial.com and see what they say about maximum DIMMS for your system.

Sometimes the Simms are in pairs and Dimms are single memory modules. Therefore, 2 256 Simms = 1 512 Dimm. I was looking at the modules for Rambus the other day and I had to stop to think about it.

Well I ain't sure,,,,didnt find the info on spacewalker, but I went back to my manual and in it's preface read...support for 512MB
of EDO RAM,DRAM,and SDRAM in standard 72 pin SIMM and 168
pin 3.3v DIMM........
Then on the next page ( FEATURES ) for memory supports:
4 SIMM sockets to support (4,8.....128MB) 72-pin EDO or FP modules and
2 Dimm sockets to (8,16.....128Mb) 168-pin SDRAB up to 256MB
Conflicting as they are ,I'm just going to purchase 2 sticks of
256 and put em in .
Thanks for the help fellows. This is a GRRRRREAT site.

I Dont think it would damage anything ,it probally just wont register in the post if anything,, sounds just like the mobo cant handle the bandwidth(i think that is the right word)..

please let us know how you make out...

did you check out crucial???
