View Full Version : Two things wrong with Wordperfect 2002
1. When you install it, 2002 doesn't upgrade the previous version of the WP suite, it just installs itself so that you have two versions of Wordperfect on your computer. It does not automatically or even provide an option for importing the previous version's dictionary, macros, quickwords, quickcorrect, or templates. You have to do this manually and WP does not provide any documentation on how to make the transfers. Hence, you will spend much time figuring out how to import these files. Given that the new version doesn't add much, upgrading is more trouble than it is worth.
2. The patches for WP are huge- for instance the latest service patch for WP 2002 is 105 MG- which makes it quite difficult to impossible to download unless you have broadband.
Just a caution for you that are thinking or upgrading.
And a third problem with Word Perfect ... It's not Word!

I used WordPerfect long before MS Office. And, I always found it to be superior to MS. Unfortunately, the corporate might of MS and its preinstallation or packaging of Word with its product has under-cut the ability of WordPerfect to keep alive since Word is now the unofficial standard for secretaries.
Sorry to see it is not as good as you would have liked.
Respectfully,

Hi Prew,
The first "problem" is not a problem at all! I have multi-versions on my system right now. I like this feature, and which other software would do the same, like Norton System Works. SW features keep getting smaller and smaller... but you can't have two version installed at one time.
2) I've got broadband, so the download is OK with me. At one time, when patches hit about 50-MB, they stopped allowing D/Ls, and you could only update by mail with a CD. But enough people, myself included, complained, and now they are offering D/Ls again. Go thru customer service to get a copy, or D/L when you go to bed, like I used to, and hope it's done in the morning.
Yes, in every review I've every read, WP has always beaten Word for form and functionality. In fact, Word's next release usually has the features of WP in their last release.

The only reason I can see why you would use multiple versions of the same program is because the newer versions didn't upgrade the previous versions- so you have macros, quickwords, etc. that aren't available on the newer version. BTW- when you install WP 2002, WP 2000 automatically uses WP 2002's dictionary so all those additions you added are no longer available in WP2000.
Oh, don't get me wrong- I like WP and use it instead of Word. My point is just that upgrading to 2002 and then importing all your files (macros, dictionary additions, quickwords, quickcorrect, templates) manually is more hassle than it is worth. For instance, I use templates that contain numerous links to Quattro Pro spreadsheets- these links that were created in WP 2000 do not work in WP 2002- I see no reason to spend the time needed to fix/update the templates. WP should provide some option to automatically import all of these files, and it should be 100% compatible with WP2000.

Hi Prew,
From you post above, I see what you mean. I've never really had all that much, as most of my work is letters and a few spread sheets.
Did you search their site or KB for some tips?? I never looked, but maybe there is something there to ease the "migration."

Funny you should ask :). A forum on WPuniverse, yesterday, pointed me to a program on the Corel site called Migration Manager. Corel should have included this program with WP suite or at least publicized it. I bet most people who upgrade don't even know this program exists ( as I didn't).

Actually, I didn't either!!! wow !! To use the same word... must have been a premonition or something?!?!?
Now, can you tell me how to do that with the lotto??
