View Full Version : NETSCAPE 6 PR2 IS NICE!

Hi,
I know I said I wouldn't do it........but I did!

I just installed PR2 on my work PC. I've still got 4.75 but, after messing around for about thirty minutes or so, I must say that I like it a lot :).

There are some bugs that I've seen. Sometimes the 'ok' button in the 'preferences' box doesn't work and I cannot minimise PR2. It just bounces back up but in a smaller window..? LOL.

Anyway they're only small things. It still has the same feel as 4.7 so I could just jump straight in and everything was where it used to be with 4.7.

Here's hoping that my registry doesn't get all screwed up ;).

Told ya...;)

The minimize thing I've noticed too, but other than that it's been great. Check the new options under your cache preferences. Selective cookies, for instance...

Besides the new stuff, it's FAST. Zips through pages that locked up NS 4.x browsers.

Hi Xayd,
Well that minimising thing disappeared and then came back....I guess that's betaware for ya! I kind of hold my breath when it loads pages.....it moves things around the page....resizing them etc.....but it hasn't crashed yet..LOL.

One thing I noticed was that I couldn't see an option to specify my e-mail address. It set it up as xxxxxxx@netscape.net. However this isn't a problem as it took the settings from 4.7....so I still get mail.

I tried to install the Flash and Shock players but NT wouldn't comply! I guess I'll have to keep using 4.75 for viewing this kind of stuff.....well for the moment at least.

I like the debug option, and the way that you can repair NS. It's something similar to IE in principle I guess but I haven't used it yet. Don't even know if it works.

Fred, was that a "crash" I heard. Ireland must be closer than I thought.

I hope they don't get too complicated with how it stores settings and mail. That's the one single thing I like the most about NS 4.x browsers. All I gotta do to back up my mails are zip up my user directories. All I gotta do to send links between my work machine and home machine is email myself an HTML file.

There's nothing wrong with simple...

BTW, the mail settings are separated from the browser preferences. If you look in the usual place with the mail client portion open, they're there.

Hi guys,
Well I guess SARGE isn't a fan of NS6 ;). I know it's only betaware and even I wouldn't DREAM of installing it on my home PC....but its quite a good 'taster' of what's to come.

I have it on my work PC because if it all goes pear-shaped I have a Ghost disk of the whole system......so it doesn't matter :D. All of my important stuff is on a network drive at the job so I'll loose nothing with a re-imaging.

But I had the machine, I had the T1, and I just had to try it......simple as that!

I hope they officialy release NS6 soon! I also hope that the 'smart download' feature will include NS6 soon as well! So far anyway it's a very good start.

As well as all this I will be retiring 95b in favour of NT4. I'd love to see how NS6 runs with 95b......just from a stability point of view!

Xayd, I'll check that out on Monday....I was a little worried there for a minute :D. Thanks for the info!

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6_PR2/windows/win32/sea/N6Setup.exe

BTW fred, I noticed there's already a PR3 folder on the ftp site, looks like we may have something to talk about again this week...:D

Guess I will wait for them to ship by mail.
Why do they make these things so huge?
Can't they make the basic browser, then add all the B S that no one uses?

Netscape 6 beta looks and runs pretty good. Very speedy. Seems stable so far.

Maybe when it finally comes out it will give IE 5.5 a challenge.

Hi guys,
Hmmmm. A PR3 version! I'll d/l that tomorrow and see if irons out some of the 'bugs'..LOL.

I REALLY hope that this the future for netscape. I've used PR2 and I like it and the interface is very good. I pray that AOL keeps their hands off it!

BTW Xayd, thanks for the PR3 link :). You can bet I'll post back with my experiences. Have you used PR3 and what differences did you see compared to PR2?

PR3 is not ready yet. Access to the 'sea" directory was denied. The 250K stub file is there, but after downloading and running it, Smart Download can't find any files to download.

I don't like Smart Download anyway. I think it's worse than M$'s Active Setup.

Yeah, that was the link to PR2 fred, there's a PR3 folder on the ftp site, though, so PR3 should be coming shortly.

Ok I never had any luck in the past with netscape but I read this thread and had to give it a shot. So far it not to bad, seems alitte slow compared to IE 5.5 and this is the first time I've used it so it hasn't any history of pages to load.
Or does it load any history? Any tips would be helpful as
this is my first time with an acual working netscape browser

TIA lil Jimmie
ps Thanks xyad for the link!

Yes, it keeps a history. It's comparable to IE 5.5 on a weaker machine, say 64 megs of RAM, but very quick on my home machine at 128 megs with a K6-2+ @ 600.

The great thing is it loads images last, so if you're going through a site that has tons of slow loading eye-candy, you can get at the text before the images load. E-Bay is a good example.

Check out the cookie features under edit/preferences/advanced/ Jimmie. When all of that stuff works this browser is gonna be great!

Things are getting better with a little time and trial! I
have 128mb of ram with a cel535 running win ME only no more 98. I have found the options and have been setting things to my taste also like the import of IE favorites feature!

Edit/Preferences/Fonts/ Oscar. All Netscape versions are the same in that regard. The settings for everything are under that menu.
