I am having start up delays when the boot reaches the last two programs: McAfee VirusScan and Zone Alarm. The processor stops and waits three times before continuing to load. Any ideas why?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Ted

Try booting into Safe Mode. Look in on your mouse and sound devices. If you see any in there that shouldn't be (did you have a Logitech mouse in the past, and have changed to something else?) ... have you changed any sound devices? And look under "System" devices, and remove anything with a VIA at the start: you are using an Intel 810 chipset and shouldn't be trying to load a Via chipset agp driver (or any Via chipset drivers at all, for that matter)

To clear any confusion about mouse drivers, you can remove ALL mice from Safe Mode and let Windows re-detect them. Most mice work just fine with the built-in mouse support in Windows.

McAffee and Zone Alarm delays are probably normal, but since I don't have either of them, perhaps someone who uses them will post some tips for you about them.

then aso unistall those Mouse drivers or cleanup the registry of the entries - both of them together add over 6 seconds boot time..

Thanks for your help!
But I am a novice and I don't understand how to use safe mode. I know how to activate it, but once there, how do I "look in on my mouse and sound devices"?
Where do I go to get into "System Devices"?

Hi again

We were referring to a couple of things: Safe Mode, Device Manager, Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and Registry cleaning.

In Safe Mode, Windows bypasses some of your startup files and loads with a bare minimum of drivers. Sounds like you know how to boot into it: it's usually either press F8 while booting/restarting, or hold down the CTL keys while booting/restarting & selecting from a menu.

I imagine you know how to get to the Control Panel. But just in case you don't. From your Start menu: Start/Settings/Control Panel. Once in the Control Panel, you'll see a variety of icons. Click on the one marked "System". You notice it has several tabs along the top. Click on the one marked "Device Manager". It will show you a list of the devices that make up your computer.

To look in on your mice and sound: Let's do the mice first. Click the little plus + sign next to "Mouse". It can't hurt to remove whatever mice Windows has listed there. Windows will re-detect your current mouse when you restart. Then, go back to the Control Panel again, and double-click on Add/Remove Programs. If you see anything on that list for Logitech mice, select and remove it. Same goes for anything that says "VIA".

Now, before we talk Sound devices: Can I assume you have drivers available? If not, download the appropriate drivers before continuing. If you aren't sure how to do this, post back.

Ok, with sound drivers available: go to Control Panel again. From Add/Remove Programs, remove your sound drivers, if you see any: if you're not sure about what's what, post back about that too. Then from Device Manager, click the plus + sign next to "sound devices....", select and remove the entries (you can leave the Wave Modem sound device alone... it's for your modem, not your sound card/builtin sound)

And Last, in Control Panel again, enter Device Manager. Click on the plus + sign next to "System Devices". Select and remove anything that starts with VIA: it shouldn't be there. You Should see lots of Intel devices, motherboard resources, ACPI, and such.
I believe your motherboard in based on the Intel 810 chipset, based on your bootlog.txt file.

When you restart, the system will detect your current mouse & load a good driver for it. It should also detect any sound devices if you removed any: if it asks to search for drivers, point it to the drivers you downloaded. That should do it.

Oops. Forgot the RegClean part. There are a few free utilities available for cleaning unnecessary references from your Registry. (leftovers from uninstalls, upgrades, mistakes...). On the Microsoft downloads website, there's RegClean (which works with very little input from the user) and RegMaid (which lets you choose actions from a list). It should help to download and run such a program, because it looks like you have some stray leftovers to clean up.

I found something weird:

In my PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility, I lists my "Default Primary Video Adapter" as PCI. Since I do have the Intel 810L chipset, shouldn't it say AGP?

Help!

Hi Ted

Next time that you're in your Bios Setup screens, you can change that setting from PCI to AGP by pressing the PageUp key. When leaving Bios Setup, choose "Save Changes & Exit"

[p.s. doesn't hurt for it to be the wrong setting on this one. It just saves time. Your computer will check both places and use the video card it finds]

Thanks for all your help Gary! I've learned alot about Set Up and the boot up thanks to you.
Finally, I uninstalled Zone Alarm and downloaded Tiny Firewall instead. Now my boot up is blazing fast! I think the new version of Zone Alarm is optimized for Windows XP, and since I still use Windows Me, it doesn't load right.
Thanks again Gary.
