the folder reads Media Bar and then DVD Player. I guess i don't know what to look for. there was a page in help and support that takes you to the website, and then you picked the company who manufactured your computer, and then it donwloaded. i think it was just a generic page. i just don't know where it is. thanks for all the help

yeah the dvd player came with the computer, but i think that media bar is what i use for watching dvd's. up at the top of all programs, there is a folder titled vaio world, with a lot of the software that came with the pc, and media bar is one of them. the rest of the software was made by sony, so this leads me to think that it is part of sony. thanks for your help

You probably have to download some other DVD decoder as the bundled software will not work when you upgraded to XP.
Here's a little about it. http://pub173.ezboard.com/funofficialsonyfrm7.showMessage?topicID=362.topic

well, that did not work. when i attempt to launch media bar. it says it cannot because a proper dvd software devoder is not installed. i know it is somewhere within the help and support of windows, because it had popped up before. it took me to a site that had like 5 or six buttons (i.e. compaq, hp, sony, toshiba) and you cliked which company made your computer, and then it sent you to a download page where you downloaded the decoder. i remember doing this on my laptop before. thanks for your help.

Guess what...I found what you found in the help section...
Open the HELP and SUPPORT from the START BUTTON, type DVD DECODER in the serch box, you should get one result 'Fix a Problem' and under it reads "If you do not have a DVD decoder". Click on it and the right screen gives you your options. Go down to the solution providers and click on the Mediamatics DVD player, this is where you saw Sony listed. Click on the Sony button and download the decoder.

Glad to be of help.. I'm not familar with Sony PC's but do know that machines like that and Dell, Gateway, Compac and such have their own version ofsoftware and sometimes are a pain.
Sony had a patch for your machine with the MediaBar when you upgraded to XP. The exe file was about half the one provided in the Help section.

well actually i thought it was working, but it now turns out that you have to download something else that media matics does not support. it said i needed to contact sony for the full upgrade for media bar. but, as long as sony responds, i think i will be set. i thought i remembered doing this a while a go and getting a message, so i just stopped. i guess if i would have read the error message, i would have been fine. thanks again for all of your help.
