Noisy modem with XP

I have a multi boot system. My modem works OK with windows98, but continues the hissing (after connenting) with windows XP. I've tried changing the settings on the "extra settings" to (AT L=0 and AT M0) with no results. Any ideas?

Have you tried to call the isp and get there tech support? Have you tried to look for new drivers for win xp and what kind of modem is it and what card bus is it?

I called MSN and they recommended I change the " extra settings" on the modem control. I tried both alternatives with no results. The modem is an "AOpen FM56 SLM soft PCI modem". XP installed it without any problems, but I just can't make it shut up after connection.

Syntax is wrong - in Extra Settings all you want to type is L0M0 - no AT, no =. This will completely shut the modem up. Note that this will have NO effect with AOL or anything else that uses a proprietary dialer - you have to go into the modem settings in the dialer to make modifications.

In XP, under Modem Configuration there is a box to uncheck to shut off the modem speaker.
In the extra settings I type ATM0. That is a zero, not the letter O

Bad news. I tried both methods and still have the modem hissing at me. I typed " L0M0" with zero not the letter " o" . And I typed " ATM0" also using the zero. No dice. Any other ideas I can use?

If all the recommendations will not sitll work, and you don't want to disconect the PC speaker then get a 99 cents mini-ear plug and try to stick it into the Modem Speaker jack. This will at least minimize the noise while connecting. I did that with an Aopen ITU/2 Modem and it worked.

Have you looked at AOpen for the possibility of an updated driver yet?

The mini ear plug sounds good at this time. I tried to locate the AOpen website, but it doesn't exist or has another name. I have a friend that will try to locate the site and download the driver (if available). So that's were I stand right now. I'll keep you posted as to my progress.

Thanks Airmack, I found the site. Now all I have to do is find the right driver. I've already downloaded a 5mb file but no luck. I still get the hissing. This is getting interesting. I think I'll write to the manufacturer for advise. I don't know what else to do.

Have you talked to your isp tech support

ISP tech support will NOT help you with this. It's a case of the wrong driver for the modem. Sure, the modem works, but you can't turn the sound off.
Two ways to fix it. Edit the modem install .inf file, and reinstall the modem with the modified driver, or get the correct driver from the modem manufacturer.
FYI, <b>NEVER</b> put "AT" or "=" in the extra settings box. It's redundant, and may cause the modem to quit responding completely. The modem init string is hidden from view, and the "Extra Settings" box is just that...extra settings, not whole ones, that means, settings you want to ADD to the current string, not replace.
Modem speaker noise is a very common problem in XP, and adding M0L0 doesn't seem to fix it in 90% of cases, whereas the correct driver does.
Another case of "Blame MS" for not considering all the stupid things modem makers do to "customize" their modems/drivers.
