While trying to clean a virus from my P-II, 233, Win 98 desktop computer, I restarted and went to the DOS prompt and typed in:

edit config.sys

The error message I received was:

"out of far memory"

Therefore, I was not able to edit any of my DOS or Windows based files.

What in the &*$@ is far memory ???

Please help. Thank you.

Hi G.W. Kremer,

Sorry, don't know what "far" memory is, but it might be better to make a boot disk to work from that is write protected instead of booting to a boot menu and then going to the DOS prompt.

What virus are you dealing with?

You might want to boot into Windows safe mode and use sysedit or msconfig if you are having a memory management issue at the DOS level.
