automatic restarting

My computer keeps restarting automatically. It did it when I had windows 2000 and its doing it now with windows XP. I am running an AMD 851 MHz. I am able to check my temp which is fine. I dont have to be doing anything in particular for it to restart. I am not playing any games that might cause it to restart. My video card is a SIS 300/305.

I have no idea what could be causing the problem, but there is a setting in system properties under the advanced tab look for start up and recovery options there will be a setting for windows to reboot upon system failure, uncheck it and check your event viewer for any system errors that appear also when you uncheck this option you may receive a blue screen the next time there is a system failure with an error code. This might give you some clue to what is causing the shut down. This is just a guess but it might be bad ram.

Hi there, Denise

How much time does it take for it to reboot after you power it on? Are you getting another errors or just the reboot? Have you done a virus scan? Did you do a clean install of XP or upgraded over win2k? How many programs do you have running when this happens and what are they?

Sounds like bad memory to me, how much ram do you have on your system and what brand is it?

I have never timed it but I'd say at least 7 minutes. No visible errors. Yes I have done a virus scan and yes it was an upgrade from win 2000. It varies how many programs I have running but it doesnt take much for it to happen. 320 mb memory

check the memory sticks one by one. It appears to be bad ram.

Pull one out and see if my computer restarts? If so then it would have to be one still in my computer?

I have the same exact problem, but mine happened after SP3 update.

With windows XP, everytime the system gets a blue screen, instead of showing you that blue screen, it will reboot your system automaticly. I havent used WIN XP in a while, so I don't know what option is it for..but some where in there, there is an option to uncheck "reboot computer on error" or something like that..like I Said I havent used win xp in a long time, so I don't know the proper name for it.but there is an option in system properties where you can disable reboot on error message

Hi there Denise,

Try them one by one. The 128 ones first. If none of them fails then add the 64 one for a total of 192MB in RAM, if it fails then you'll know the 64 stick is the bad one.

When I got up this morning and turned on my computer, it was as if windows XP never existed on my computer. It just boot straight from win 2000. which is on my Drive D. XP is on C. I have tried everything except throwing my computer overboard. I made the start up disks. (6) It wont repair the installation only install a fresh installation. Which means I lose any and all files.

Under the system properties, Click the advanced tab, choose "start up and recovery" settings, and disable automatically restart.
