boot up not finished

I am helping a friend out. His son had inadvertently flip
off the wall power switch while his other son was using
the PC. After that the pc boots only up to windows logo
and displayed this error

unable to get data from drive

abort! retry! .......

He is using win98 200mhz cpu. I had tried scanreg/restore
but nothing shows while doing that and the system just
waits. I had to reboot again . Please help

I would try to hit f10 during boot up then select safe mode. while in safe mode check the device manager for device conflicts then try to restart normally.

I had tried going to safe mode but it wont load. Still
the same 'failure to get data from disk' ......

I had also tried a new stick of ram.
Booting up with win98 start-up and perform
sys c:
System tranferred, still no go.
I could see all the files in c:windows at dos prompt.
had also tried scandisk with the usual blue page,
it did the routine checking and then it just waits.
Had to reboot.

Is there anything else i need to do.

Seems like your having a problem with your harddrive. I would install another and reload windows, once this is complete I would then hook up the old drive as a slave then try to salvage my files.

Are there any other things to try out rather than buying
a new hardrive. Is it a registry corrupted problems.?

If can not get scan disk to complete more than likely there is damage to the harddrive.
