I'm working on an IBM Thinkpad and trying to get it back to factory settings. I have the recovery disks and have started to run the programs. I got an error, and in doing some research on IBM's site it is a result that the HD is FAT32 (from a 98 upgrade) and the original win95 need to be recovered to a FAT drive.

I want to dump all the data on the drive, but how do I format it back to a FAT drive?

To make it a pain, I can't start the computer from the HD now, I assume it is due to a partial recovery. I have a win98 startup but not a win95.

Thanks in advance.

Start with a Windows 95 floppy boot disk and run FDISK. Eliminate the partitions and create new one(s). That should do it.

Now put your recovery CDs and you're set.

If it doesn't work, then use a W98 boot disk and do the same. Just eliminate the partitions and don't create new ones. If it asks you if you wanna enable support for larger disks answer No.

Now use your recovery CD and perhaps it will do the format.

Any other input from my fellow members could be appreciated.
