Hi zog,
Did you install the soundcard drivers?
Are you using a separate soundcard or on-board sound?

Have you successfully installed the modem ? If you have a voice modem the wave drivers have to be loaded before even system sounds (Other than POST beeps) will work.

Curious as to why you reformatted. When reinstalling a SiS chipset board with Win98, you'd need to reinstall their audio drivers (like Cricket mentions - I'm guessing you're using the onboard CMI sound). And like mkbert mentions, install the modem if you haven't already, that will install the audio portion of the drivers along with the telephony drivers. And check in the Mixer program for your sound to make sure the output isn't muted.

What kind of keyboard is your friend's? . . . USB? Perhaps you're having an IRQ conflict. Doesn't seem like a monitor would figure into the problem in any way, unless you're using speakers built into the monitor. . . . is that the case?
I suppose you could boot into Safe Mode, and in Device Manager remove all the keyboards you find in there, and let Windows re-detect your motherboard when you reboot. Couldn't hurt. Might look in on your mice and sound devices while your in Device Manager, too: just to make sure you don't see anything that shouldn't be there (old devices that you've removed long ago, for example).
And just to make sure that the monitor isn't a factor, you can leave your monitor attached, but switch to your friends keyboard: that should give you the same success you had with both his keyboard and his monitor attached. (unless it's some sort of multimedia monitor)
I'll check back tomorrow sometime, it's getting late (especially in my foggy brain)

Hello,
Also, check under volume controls and make sure mute all isn't checked. I reloaded 98SE and had the same experience you describe, then found the "mute all" box was checked by default when the program reloaded.
Never mind, I missed the part about having sound with other keyboard...
I have tried all that you suggest and I am now getting sound it is just very faint. My friends monitor is usb,but my speakers are not attached to it.Since I am now getting sound I am mow thinking that the speakers are damaged in some way,as I have checked volume controls and they are all at maximum.Again many Thanks for all your help and advice.

Try taking your speakers over to another computer to see if they're OK.
One other thing: if you are using a CMI onboard sound, like the 8738, it's driver can be set up several different ways, depending on the speaker arrangement you have. If you only have 2 speakers, you'll want to set that up in the driver: it might default to 4.1 or 5.1 sound nowadays. The mic and line-in jacks double as Right/Center/Left/Subwoofer substitutes. It's possible you're receiving only part of the sound, which might partly explain why it's so faint. If you're unsure about the drivers setup, you can try Safe Mode again, this time uninstalling your current sound drivers, then from Safe Mode removing your sound devices (leave the modem's wave/voice device alone) and then reinstalling a recent driver at reboot. If you download a newer driver, it will come with instructions in a ReadMe.txt file.
Good luck

Hi Gary and all,
I am posting this to you let you know that I contacted motherboards manufacturer who told me that I needed amplified speakers.I thought all speakers were amplified, anyway have got hold of some and sound is now OK.
Once again thanks for all the help given.
