is there any way of uninstalling directx without restarting my computer?
and if not, is there any way to get my games to run on an older version with the newest version still there?
thanks in advance.

Why don't you want to restart your computer. It's kinda so it can resituate itself and start up w/the right files. Clear it's head =)
Anyway, they are backwards compatible. When a game says DX7 is necessary, it should say at least b/c dx8 is fine. You should grap the newest one, or newest your comp can handle and be done w/it. If you are having some specific problem or some error let me know.

Ok, I was going to go play diablo2 one day and it said that directdraw wouldn't work. This is after i installed neverwinternights that never worked. I beleave it installed directx 8. Anyway i ran a graphics test with diablo 2 and it said that i didn't have directx 7 or better. So i try to download it from the disk and it says that i already have a better version on my computer. After than i uninstalled all the dirctx files that i could find and then downloaded 8.1. and it still doesn't work. My divx player also isn't working for the same reason.
rebooting my comp from the start isn't really an option because the computer isn't totally mine so if there is another option I'd like to know.

You can check out start->run->dxdiag. Is that where you did the direct draw test? What kind of system do you have?
Oh, and I get it now. when you say reboot/restart you're talking about reinstalling your OS and stuff? I wouldn't try that at this point.

Yeah, sometimes it gets very frustrating doing the DX .........
anyway,if you are using WinME,try SYSTEM RESTORE to restore your previous setting......it can undo all the error

system:
550 mhz pentium 3 running windows 98
I ran the video test off the diablo2 disc
I said restart/reboot when i meant re-installing the OS
The only way I know of to uninstall DirectX and revert to an earlier version is with DirectX Buster - and it's not always successful.

Did DirectX Buster come out with a DirectX 8.x version yet?? Haven't checked in a while, but the last time I used it, it was for 7.x or earlier.

Also, shouldn't any DirectX game work with 8.x? It's supposed to be backward compatable. I mention this because reverting to a prior version didn't fix the problem when I had to do it a while ago (when 8.0 came out). It turned out to be a Windows problem. It was finally fixed with a fresh OS re-install.
