View Full Version : win 98SE program files folder
hi everyone,
when I click start, programs, my list is huge! I was wondering is it possible in the "program files" folder to create new folders and "drag and drop" the program files into a more organized system without screwing everything up? Are there any certain ones that should not be moved if this is possible?

Are you talking about moving the shortcuts from your desktop to a new folder, or do you want to move the programs themselves to a new folder? Moving the shortcuts themselves should cause no problems, but moving the programs themselves will cause every shortcut leading to the programs to be wrong because they will not know where to find the programs.

Hi reet,
Right click on the taskbar and choose Properties. Click the Start Menu Programs tab and then click on Advanced. From here you can create new folders and then move the shortcut icons around to clean up the Start Menu. The links will know they're been moved and the programs will start up properly.

I am wanting to organize the "file folders and shortcuts" in the Start Menu - Programs folder. Want to group same type of programs into a general file folder such as "Games" or "HTML editors" etc

You can do that. Cricket already told you how. Just create the new folders, name them as you'd like and then start dragging the other folders and/or icons to the ones you created.
Just wanted to make sure I could move the file folders also. Cricket just included "and then move the shortcut icons around" so I wanted to double check about the file folders.
Thanks!
Rita

Hi reet ,
Please be real careful here !!!!!!!!! If you ues any method besides Cricket's, you can run into trouble.
More explicitly, if you mess with the actual Program Files folder, your system will Not run correctly, and may not even start! And, that is not the correct folder to make actual changes to. Be safe and use the above method. It works, and it's safe!

Your programs will still able to start up properly from the Start Menu. I do this all the time.
